Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has insisted that Wilfried Zaha remains committed to Côte d’Ivoire amid speculation the attacker could retire from international service.

The 28-year-old played for his country of birth in October, but returned to Selhurst Park with illness and subsequently missed a 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

Côte d’Ivoire will face Mozambique and Cameroon in the World Cup qualifiers later this month, but Zaha will not be in the squad after Patrice Beaumelle, the Elephants coach, told reporters Thursday that the extreme ‘wants to reflect on the rest of his international career’ because ‘he comes home sick after every meeting’.

But speaking before Saturday’s Premier League game with Wolves, Vieira said: ‘What I know is that Wilfried still wants and hopes to go to international matches.

“ He made it clear to me when talking to him how much he loves playing for the Ivory Coast and how proud it would be for him to go to the World Cup with the Ivory Coast.

“ He still wants to be on the international stage, so I was quite surprised to see all these comments in recent days.

“I will support him and we will support him, so now it is up to the coach (of Ivory Coast) to make the decision on who will go.”

Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher are two other Palace players that an international manager spoke about this week, and Gareth Southgate is honest about how they are among the closest to making his England squad.

Chelsea’s youth products, the latter only on loan from the Blues, have quickly taken hold in Selhurst Park, but Vieira isn’t worried about the Three Lions coach’s praise going to their heads.

He added: ‘To be honest with those two players, we are not worried at all and I am not worried. They are not only good soccer professionals, but they are also good human beings.

“They know they didn’t get what they wanted and there is still a long way to go.

“Even the praise from the England manager will not worry me at all because they are still working hard, working well and challenging themselves. That is why I think one day they will succeed in the national team. ‘

Ebere Eze also came close to being a part of Southgate’s team in the summer when an Achilles injury in May dashed his hopes.

The Palace playmaker stepped up his rehab this week after playing more than an hour for the Under-23s against Blackburn, but will not be part of the senior team against Wolves on Saturday.

“He’s fine,” Vieira said. ‘He played 60 minutes with the U23 and feels very good, so he is progressing.

‘It is still a bit early (to be part of the squad of the day). He only played 60 minutes, he needs to play more games and he needs to complete 90 minutes before we take him into consideration. ”

Eze and Nathan Ferguson (Achilles) are the only two players not available for Palace.
