Dating past

I’ve been divorced for almost three years and even though I’m on dating apps, I haven’t been in a serious relationship since my divorce. That’s only because I haven’t found anyone I can really bond with.

Pre-date nerves?

Yes, I was nervous! It’s the unknown, isn’t it? I was afraid to meet a total stranger. I reassured myself by imagining that they would feel the same.

Someone who loves children, is easy going and can hold a good conversation. He is open to trying different cuisines and it would be great if he is bigger than me.

First impression?

Thanks to London transport I was 15 minutes late at the restaurant. A waiter led me to Sean and he immediately got up, pulled out my chair and went in for a hug – I liked that. Sean looked smart in a yellow long-sleeved shirt and black pants. I was concerned about how he would react if I arrived late, but he immediately put me at ease.

Easy to talk to?

He is younger than me and yet he is mature. He complimented me by saying I don’t look that old, but I’m not sure what a mother in her late thirties should look like.

Sean made me laugh when he told me he’s not good at basketball even though he’s six feet. He is originally from Nigeria, while I grew up in Mauritius. I speak fluent French and I think Sean was quite impressed. He practiced his very basic French with me which was cute.

Embarrassing moments?

I wanted to feel a spark, but it was more of a friendly feeling

The couple at the next table were clearly listening to our conversation, which was awkward. Also, we only had two hours at the table. It felt like we were being rushed and we were not given dessert.

Did sparks fly?

LIKED? Sean’s company was very easy.

REGRET? Being late.

COFFEE OR CAB? Coffee as friends

I really wanted that instant spark. Instead, I had more of a friendly feeling. I liked that Sean preferred women who were shorter than him because he wants to feel protective. It’s quite a gallant thing.

See him again?

I suspect Sean is interested in another date. He did say he would like to take me to an African restaurant. I would see Sean again for a fun day out; right now I don’t think it would be in a romantic sense.

What do you think he thought of you?

Sean complimented me a lot. His open body language suggested he liked me too.

Would your friends like him?

They would appreciate that he took me to the subway and that he is easy to talk to. I arrived late and stressed, but thanks to him those feelings disappeared.

Dating past

My only serious relationship was when I was in my twenties. We were together for three years, but unfortunately things went wrong and she suddenly ended it. She is now married with two children and I am very single. Dating during the lockdown was almost impossible. It’s been a frustrating 18 months and I’m ready for an adventure.

A friendly, funny, talkative and shapely woman. I see age as just a number, so it doesn’t matter if she’s older. Ideally, she will have a positive outlook on life and not be too tall.

No, I had time to sit down at our table and calm myself down. I ordered some water while waiting for Sabrina. I didn’t want to start the party without her.

ffirst impressions?

Wow! Sabrina looked fantastic and I told her so. Sabrina is shapely and obviously takes good care of herself. She looked gorgeous in a shirt dress with a belt, leggings and ankle boots. She apologized profusely for being late. It was respectful of her to do that, although it sounded like she’d had the journey from hell.

Easy to talk to?

Yes! We bonded over our love for seafood. To start I had crab and Sabrina went for scallops, and for main we had the lobster linguini. We also talked about our cultural heritage and our favorite types of cuisine, such as jollof rice, a type of dumpling called boulettes, a Mauritian sea dish and a bean cake called moi moi.

Embarrassing moments?

Not until my knife fell off the table. I don’t think Sabrina was bothered by it. Thankfully, she didn’t comment or make a fuss about it.

It was a memorable date – there was a lot of chemistry

Did sparks fly?

LIKED? Sabrina is a good conversationalist.

Yes, there was a lot of chemistry between us. Sabrina, I think, wanted to spend more time together. But we had to give up the table and Sabrina had to go home to her daughters. Although she would have liked to move on, I was concerned that she would come home, so I walked her to the subway station and gave her a hug.

Do you see them again?

We didn’t exchange numbers, I wasn’t sure we could. I would definitely like to see Sabrina again. It was an unforgettable date and a positive experience for both of us.

What do you think she thought of you?

She said I’m a gentleman and I take that as a compliment.

Would your friends like her?

Yes. Sabrina is attractive and she is also lively company.
