A video of a sloth being carried down a road to safety has gone viral, and viewers say it’s “too pure for this world.”

The footage, captured by Adriane Gonçalves Serrão of Caieiras, Brazil, shows the moment a man ducked down to pick up a sloth that was trying to cross a road and take him to a nearby tree.

At the end of the clip, which was shared on Twitter, the sloth turns and appears to thank the man by gently touching his hand with his three-fingered paw.

Animal lovers swooned over the ‘beautiful’ interaction, saying it was the ‘best thing they’d seen’.

However, an expert warned that the sloth did not thank the rescuer, but protected itself from a perceived threat.

The Good Samaritan stopped traffic and parked his car in the middle of the road to rescue the animal, which was slowly coming to the other side.

An adult sloth can reach speeds of up to 0.27 km/h. In comparison, people walk an average of 5 km per hour.

The man gently lifted the animal with a towel and pried his paws off the road.

Once he had crossed the road, he held the animal gently against a tree trunk so that it clung to it, and patted its back reassuringly.

After it was given a lift, the animal turned to face the man, on the left, and then extended its arm toward him, on the right. Viewers thought it looked like a ‘thank you’ – but actually it’s a sign of protection

After finding the best branch to hold on to, the animal turned and stretched out its arm toward the man, in a gesture many regarded as a sign of gratitude.

But dr. Rebecca Cliffe, founder and executive director of the Sloth Conservation Foundation, explained that the sloth was trying to protect itself.

She said: “A lot of people think that when sloths stick out their arms like this, they’re waving or saying hello, or even asking for a hug. This is of course not true at all.

Sloths are a prey species with no effective means of defending themselves against predators.

“When they’re scared and feel threatened, they often stretch out their arms to make them look bigger. It’s essentially a stress response that many people misinterpret.’

But few viewers interpreted the signal correctly and took to Twitter to gush about the moment.

One posted: ‘Simply one of the prettiest thank you cards I’ve ever seen! Thanks for sharing this remarkable clip! Beautiful without words.’

“Real tears,” said one, while another wrote, “They are too pure for this world.”

“If anyone needs me, I’ll watch this video for the rest of the day,” said another.

“Thank you – what a beautiful way to start the day, a wonderful creature and an act of kindness,” said another.
