‘He should have listened to Jose’: Footage of Mourinho telling Dele Alli he will regret not demanding ‘more’ of himself in Tottenham’s All Or Nothing series goes viral as Everton flop is associated with Besiktas
- A clip of Jose Mourinho’s advice to All Or Nothing’s Dele Alli has gone viral
- The Everton midfielder was told he would be ‘regret’ if he didn’t reach his potential
- Alli’s career has hit a roadblock and he could join Turkey’s Besiktas on loan
Jose Mourinho’s pep talk with Dele Alli during their time at Tottenham has gone viral after the England midfielder was linked with a move to Besiktas.
Now at Everton, 26-year-old Alli was found unwanted under Frank Lampard at Goodison Park, and was linked with a loan transfer to the Turkish club as part of a discussion about his future in football.
While at Spurs, Alli got some advice on how to reach his potential from then-boss Mourinho – who was featured in Amazon’s All Or Nothing documentary about the club.
That advice has since taken hold on social media, with many believing that Alli’s career might have been on a different path had he listened to the Portuguese gaffer.
This tweet featured Jose Mourinho’s career advice to Dele Alli while he was together at Tottenham
Mourinho ran Spurs between 2019 and 2021, as documented by Amazon’s All Or Nothing series
In the clip, Mourinho told Alli: “I’m 56 now and yesterday, yesterday I was 20. In no time. Time flies.
One day I think you will regret not achieving what you can achieve.
“I don’t expect you to be the man of the match every game, I don’t expect you to score goals every game. I want to tell you that I think you will regret it.
“You should demand more of you. I demand no more from you. Not me. No one. You. I think you should demand more from you.’
The video was posted by @IbkSports, with the comment ‘If you don’t love Jose Mourinho after watching this video, you must be related to players like Dele Alli and Paul Pogba who never listened…’
As Alli nodded in agreement to Mourinho’s words during the Amazon clip, those on Twitter were quick to wonder if the midfielder really heard anything, with one saying ‘He wasn’t listening’.
Another added: ‘Obviously Dele Alli never learned from that advice. So annoying to see such a top talent go to waste.’
Twitter users were quick to praise ‘The Special One’ for his wise advice to Alli at Spurs
Fans were quick to defend Mourinho from criticism after the clip’s re-release.
Jose’s wise words led one fan to say ‘The Special One for a reason’, in a nod to the label Mourinho often got after his early success at Porto and Chelsea.
Alli has received his fair share of criticism for failing to meet expected standards
One said: ‘Show respect for Jose’, while another said: ‘Spot on Mourinho. Spent a great afternoon with him, infectious and passionate guy.’
“It’s Mourinho’s fault in the voice of ‘English pundits,'” claimed one fan in response to the video. “Dele Ali has fallen so much that the Turkish side wants him. Please respect Mourinho.’
Meanwhile, Alli’s failure to live up to the high expectations once placed on him has also been picked up by social media critics, with one saying “he’s nothing but a should-be. Got what the game gave him and gave no more to the game.’
“The fact that Mourinho went through the stress of doing this means that Dele Alli had insane potential, but a shame he didn’t mean it seriously,” another joked.
“He didn’t listen and now he is on loan to Besiktas,” one person tweeted. ‘This guy was once one of the brightest young talents in Europe.’
Mourinho’s words have also been interpreted as a life message away from the football field
Mourinho’s words have also caught the attention of those who can see their impact off the football pitch – as they reflect the advice some people need outside of the sport.
One tweet read: “This is not just about football, but life as a whole. This is the message.’
Alli made 181 appearances for Spurs, scoring 51 goals between 2015 and 2022, when he moved to Everton for free in January after being made redundant at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Now the same fate has happened on Merseyside, and it could be Besiktas giving him the chance to try and reach his football potential.
Alli has emerged as a target for Besiktas, potentially leading him to leave Everton on loan
