USC and UCLA meet on Saturday for the 89th time in the Colosseum. This football rivalry, known as the "Crosstown Rivalry" or "Battle for LA", is one of the more unusual in collegiate sports from 1929. The campuses are only 12 miles apart and are located in Los Angeles. Both schools compete for the Victory Bell, which is painted red or blue, depending on the outcome of the game.

The game has Rose Bowl, conference or divisional championships at stake. Before the Pac-10 was extended to the Pac-12 in 2011, the Rose Bowl and the conference championship were at stake 20 times for both teams and at least 37 times for one team. After the extension of the conference and the establishment of the football divisions with UCLA and USC in the South Division, the division title and a berth in the Pac-12 Championship game have already been on the line at least twice. From the 2018 season, USC leads the all-time series with 47-32-7 (USC has lost two wins due to NCAA sanctions).

USC and UCLA fans, alums, students, and college football fans from around the world will watch the Trojans and Bruins fight it out on the soccer field for the king of college football in LA. The rivalry, however, means more than just a football match and bragging to individuals who are connected to the schools, and who simply like to watch a good rivalry on the football field. It also has social implications in Southern California.
