Turning Point USA co-founder dies of coronavirus-related complications

In a statement commemorating Montgomery, Turning Point USA praised his role in elevating Kirk and the organization, calling him the group’s “ first believer and senior advisor, ” although Montgomery often described himself as a co-founder.

Charlie Kirk said in an additional statement to POLITICO, “I cannot put into words how sad I am by the death of my dear friend Bill Montgomery.”

Before starting Turning Point with Kirk, Montgomery, who lived in Illinois, worked in marketing, publishing, restaurants, and was a business development consultant.

A 2015 National Journal story shared how Montgomery met Kirk when he was 18 and urged him not to go to university, but instead told him after a speech at Benedictine University, ‘I don’t know you, but you need to start an organization to reach out to young people with your message. “So the following month, the two launched Turning Point together.

“It was the coincidental meeting of Bill and Charlie in 2012, along with Bill’s generosity and willingness to invest in an 18-year-old with no experience and no connections that yielded the dream that would one day become Turning Point USA,” Turning Point said.

In Maggio’s video, he said, one of Montgomery’s goals was to make Kirk, a close ally of Donald Trump Jr., president one day. Maggio called Montgomery “thoroughly conservative” who “wore it as a badge of honor.”

Montgomery is survived by his widow Edie, a son and a daughter.

In the course of the pandemic, representatives of Turning Point USA have weakened the impact of the coronavirus on public life.

In two earlier episodes of his podcast, March 16 and April 23, Kirk stated that he believed the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions should be quarantined themselves. Beyond that, however, he has questioned the vast majority of public health proposals to limit the spread of the community. On the Sunday edition of his podcast, Kirk said, “Don’t force me to wear a mask, it’s that simple. I’m not going to do it, I’m not going to do it. ‘

‘[E]occasionally when I go to one of these supermarkets, “Where’s your mask?” I say, first of all, the science surrounding masks is very questionable, very questionable, ”he said. “Some people, some doctors even think that masks really make you sicker, which can make you less likely to get oxygen and infect yourself faster, and have less chance of fighting the virus, and actually are more likely to die earlier.

Many people believe that. I’ve met a lot of doctors who have that opinion, “Kirk added. Second, we have a huge issue of civil liberty here. Why do you have the authority to tell me what I can and cannot do with my body? I thought it was “my body, my choice.” ”

The latest guidelines from the State Centers for Disease Control that wearing face masks has proven effective in preventing anyone infected with Covid-19 from passing the disease on to others, and therefore leading to less spread in the community. Several states and cities have passed mask regulations as a result.

Kirk was briefly banned from Twitter in late March for falsely claiming that the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine was “100% effective” in treating the coronavirus. He also urged to quickly reopen the country’s economy, albeit in March he said young people were in danger against the virus and that they should be careful by avoiding large gatherings.

In late June, Trump spoke to a busy audience of young Turning Point supporters at a mega-church in Phoenix, where he was introduced by Kirk. Few people in the audience practiced social distances or wore masks, although the organization gave masks to anyone who wanted one and provided socially distanced seating in the top tier of the church.

Speaking to questions about Kirk’s comments on masks, a spokesman said, “Charlie has long said that if you are in risk cohorts, that is, the elderly and people with comorbidities or underlying health problems – of which Bill is part of both cohorts, both groups, – you must take all possible precautions. If they’d talked about it, Charlie would have recommended that he quarantine himself. Charlie has questioned the effectiveness of masks for low-risk groups, including school children, children under 60 who are in good health.

“The mainstream media wants to vote dissident and censor a robust debate, and that’s what Charlie advocates for a robust debate. With so many lives and actually the whole country involved, we need that debate more than ever. ‘
