TikTok reaches LG televisions: after conquering mobile phones, the social network goes for the living room
A little less than a year ago, TikTok made a most peculiar move. Despite being a social network focused on video in an eminently vertical format, launched an application for Samsung televisions. Funny, especially considering that except The Sero, all televisions are horizontal.
Globally, Samsung leads the ranking of the best-selling television brands with a 32% market share. The second position is LG, which is left with 19.2%. That is precisely why it is not surprising that after launching its app for Samsung televisions, now let your LG counterparts receive it.
TikTok comes to LG TVs
As reported by the company, the application of TikTok will be available in the 2020 and 2021 models, which are those that have webOS 5.0 and webOS 6.0. The app arrived with a firmware update deployed on October 7 and LG indicates that it will also reach the 2019 models “in the coming months.”
Unfortunately, LG has not specified in which countries the app will be available. On a personal note, I can confirm that on an LG OLED CX 55 “TV updated to the latest version not available yet. It should be noted that TikTok is also available on Android TV and Fire TV, although not in all countries.
The question to ask is why is TikTok launching applications for televisions? After all, it is an app thought and designed one hundred percent for the mobile, while this form factor allows you to consume content vertically and scroll quickly, something that televisions do not.
The answer is relatively simple: expand your audience and allow that, as if it were YouTube, content can be viewed with more people at the same time. According to the company itself, TikTok has 1 billion monthly active users, a significant figure if we take into account that it is similar to that of Instagram and half that of WhatsApp.
