Thomas Tuchel has revealed he was ‘stunned’ when he was sacked by Chelsea in a statement he described as one of the ‘hardest’ he has ever had to write.

The German manager, who led Chelsea to the Champions League in 2021, was sacked by the club on Wednesday after their 1-0 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb.

Tuchel has broken his silence on social media, admitting that his farewell statement to Chelsea fans was one he hoped he wouldn’t have to do for years.

In the statement on Twitter, he wrote: “This is one of the hardest statements I’ve ever had to write – and it’s one I hoped I wouldn’t have to do for years. I am devastated that my time at Chelsea has come to an end.

“This is a club where I felt at home both professionally and personally. Thank you so much to all the staff, players and supporters for making me feel very welcome from the start.

“I will always remember the pride and joy I felt when I helped the team win the Champions League and the Club World Cup. I am honored to be part of the history of this club and the memories of the past 19 months will always have a special place in my heart.”

Tuchel was thrown in the trash by Chelsea just 100 days after the reign of new owner Todd Boehly, who replaced Roman Abramovich.

The American’s ruthless dismissal of Tuchel came despite the German being a popular manager among Chelsea supporters after leading them to the Champions League trophy in his first season with the club.

Last year, the Blues finished third in the standings, although a long way from Manchester City and Liverpool – they lost to the latter on penalties in the finals of both the Carabao and FA Cup finals.

Chelsea spent more than £260m on new players this summer, including Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and defenders Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana.

But after winning just 50% of their Premier League games so far this season, followed by their opening defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, Tuchel was sacked and replaced by impressive Brighton boss Graham Potter.

Sportsmail revealed that Tuchel will be getting £13million in severance pay, and a further £2million will go to his backroom staff.

Tuchel was an emotional figure in his technical field during his time at Stamford Bridge, often yelling at his players from the dugout.

But it was a habit that made his players sick. Sportsmail revealed that a number of Chelsea wide players did not like playing on Tuchel’s side, along the East Stand of Stamford Bridge.

It is clear that the Stamford Bridge chieftains have made the decision to part ways with Tuchel ahead of the loss in Croatia.

Chelsea’s pre-season campaign was when cracks started to form and became apparent to a wider audience.

Tuchel, who unfortunately had to become more involved in transfers after losing the trusted network, which included director Marina Granovskaia and technical and performance advisor Petr Cech, which he had so valued and missed, cut a noticeably frustrated figure while Chelsea was in America.

Boehly and co-owner Behdad Eghbali were on hand at the Maksimir Stadium to watch the defeat in Zagreb and wasted no time in sacking the German.

Tuchel is leaving after leading Chelsea to UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup victory.
