It is clear that electric cars get more and more autonomy, but we are still below 500 or 600 km in most models. So the “hassle” of having to fully charge the car on longer trips is still there. What if we want to go from Bilbao to Algeciras and we are unlucky enough not to come across a porter?
These hypotheses may have their days numbered: a United States company called Our Next Energy has obtained financing from several large manufacturers to be able to manufacture a new type of “dual battery” that achieves autonomies of up to 1,200 km. At the moment they are still preparing a prototype, but they have already achieved improvements of 88% of autonomy in a client with whom they have made the first tests.
One half for short trips, another half for long ones
This dual system consists of one half of the battery composed of lithium iron phosphate (called ‘Aries’) thought to withstand many charges and discharges and to be the main source of energy during all the short trips of the car. The other half (‘Gemini’) would be made up of other components that could bring extra energy to ‘Aries’, but at a slower pace.
This support half would come into action on long-term routes transferring a maximum of 6kW, and would need a slow charge as assumed at the source. But on long trips that battery could be charged overnight, when travelers sleep and charging time is no longer important.
In other words, it is as if a main car battery could be momentarily charged using an additional battery specially designed and optimized for it. Its managers promise that they will extract the necessary minerals in a non-conflictive way and that there will be an abundance of them despite the difficulties that may arise regarding their availability.
