The Orlando Magic received the No. 5 picks in the 2021 NBA Draft after months of losing, a firesale, and some tanking.
And Jeff Weltman appeared to be on the verge of crying.
The Magic had a 14 percent chance of winning the draft lottery when they entered, but they fell to fifth place after the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers pushed into the top five.
The Detroit Pistons, who finished last season with the league’s second-worst record of 20-52, won the lottery and the Cade Cunningham grand prize.
The Rockets were chosen second, the Cavaliers third, and the Raptors fourth.
The Magic, who had a 14.8 percent probability of getting the third overall pick, ended up with it.
