Home stylists have revealed the ten household items you should never buy new if you want to save money and the environment.
The team of Wiring have revealed that scrolling through Facebook marketplace, meandering through thrift stores and searching Gumtree are the best ways to buy mirrors, wicker furniture and retro lamps.
The experts said shoppers should never feel the need to buy new things like picture frames, wooden stools, solid wood desks or ladderback chairs.
Mid-century retro lamps and consoles like the ones in the photos are best bought second-hand
Ten popular pieces of furniture made it onto the linen bedding company’s “don’t buy new” list.
In this case, buying retro generally means buying original and quality.
There are many ‘new’ mid-century models available at furniture stores, but in many cases they lack the original quality.
Consoles are great because they can add instant elegance as a statement piece to any room, say the experts.
Wicker or wicker furniture
Wicker and wicker furniture can be picked up cheaply second-hand. Due to its popularity in the 1970s, there is a lot up for grabs. It can add the finishing touch to retro, beach vibe and boho style interiors.
Picture frames can be easily picked up at any thrift store – people online sell complete sets if you prefer matching frames rather than an eclectic look. They can be picked up at many stores for as little as 0.50 cents and are generally better made than cheap, new frames.
Statement mirrors can be very expensive to buy new, but op-shops are usually teeming with them. While it may take some time to find the right piece for your space, it is usually worth it, cost-wise.
Gold-plated mirrors make a great statement piece in any home and can be purchased at a reasonable price from thrift stores
Retro lamps are popular right now and the good news is that you don’t have to opt for a retro remake to get the look you want in your home. These are also easy to find in thrift stores and online marketplaces.
A well-stocked bar cart is a must-have for those who often entertain at home. But the quirky feature doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and often second-hand versions are perfect for the job.
Vintage upholstered chairs are usually made from better base materials than newer versions, making them perfect for upcycling. You can easily cover the chairs with the fabric of your choice.
Upholstered chairs are also good to buy second-hand because vintage models are often made with better base materials
Bar carts are getting popular again – but they don’t have to break the bank and there are plenty of reasonable options available second hand
Wooden stools are easy to pick up from thrift stores and the market. They are usually sturdy and can be used for more than just seating. Many people use them as bedside tables and plant stands.
Solid wood desks
Solid wood desks can be considered a great item, but buy from a thrift store – be sure to check the drawers to make sure they work properly and are mold free before buying.
ladder back chairs
Ladderback chairs are the last piece of furniture on the list and may date as far back as the 17th century, experts say. They said ‘it almost feels wrong to buy them brand new’.
