The 100 Most Expensive Football Transfers of All Time

Neymar completed his move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a staggering fee of € 222 million in the summer of 2017 and the big deals haven’t stopped since Kylian Mbappe accompanied him in Paris for € 145 million plus € 35 million in bonuses.

As a result of his move to the French capital, the Brazilian is now the most expensive player of all time, breaking the previous record for Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, who arrived in Old Trafford from Juventus in 2016 for € 105 million. Mbappé is now in second place on the list.

Atletico Madrid’s massive € 126 million release for Benfica’s Joao Felix in July 2019 makes the Portuguese star the third highest on our list.

Philippe Coutinho’s move from Liverpool to Barcelona in January 2018 now puts him in fourth place, while Barca’s conquests of the French duo Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele of Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund respectively see them ahead of Pogba.

Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid from Chelsea for € 100 million plus add-ons puts him in ninth place together. Cristiano Ronaldo occupies ninth and eleventh positions on the list, with his move to Juventus in the summer of 2018 overshadowing the cost of his move to Manchester United from Real Madrid nine years earlier.

Most expensive British player

Gareth Bale is the most expensive British player of all time and cost Real Madrid € 100.8 million in 2013.

At the time, Bale was the most expensive player in history, but dropped to eighth in the rankings in 2019. He now supports Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho.

The most expensive English player in history, by the way, is Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who came from Leicester City in 2019 for € 87.1 million.

Most expensive teenager

Kylian Mbappe is the most expensive teenager ever after joining PSG with a loan to buy that will be worth € 180 million after bonuses.

Not only is he the most expensive teenage footballer of all time, but Mbappé is also the second most expensive player of all time.

Joao Felix follows Mbappé as the second most expensive teenager, after being signed by Benletica from Benfica in 2019 for € 126 million.

Most expensive defender

Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender of all time when Manchester United paid € 87.1 million to Leicester City for the services of the English international in 2019.

Maguire caught up with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk in the process, but only marginally, with the central defender of the Netherlands costing the Reds € 84.5 million

Most expensive keeper

Kepa Arrizabalaga Athletic Bilbao

Kepa Arrizabalaga is the most expensive goalkeeper in history after Chelsea spent € 80 million to fulfill his 2018 release clause with Athletic Club.

Former Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon held this mark for a long time after joining the Turin outfit for € 52 million from Parma, which is a colossal fee if inflation is taken into account.

The record was broken twice within a few weeks. First Liverpool brought in Roma’s Alisson Becker for € 73 million to temporarily take the streak as the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

Not to be outdone, Chelsea agreed to Kepa’s release clause less than a month later, meaning Spanish international Alisson has quickly dethroned for the No. 1 spot in transfer history.

Largest transfer outside of Europe

The highest amount a non-European club has ever paid for a player is € 60.3 million, which Shanghai SIPG handed over to Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Oscar in 2016.

But with the way the market goes, who knows which record will be broken next?
