Emma Raducanu’s first appearance in the country where her father was born will be played in front of empty stands.

The Transylvanian Open announced that due to a Covid-related ‘last minute’ decision by the Romanian government, fans would not be admitted to next week’s tournament. Cases of the virus are at record levels in the country.

In addition to the US Open champion, local fans will now not have a chance to see Romanian superstar and 2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep.

Meanwhile, Raducanu is believed to be fielding Esteban Carril, the Spaniard who helped turn Jo Konta into a world-class player.

Carril, 44, had a playing career but has built an excellent reputation as a coach. It took Konta from outside the top 100 to number 10 before they surprisingly parted ways in late 2016, shortly after being voted the most improved player of that year.

While there has been no official confirmation yet, it appears the identified candidate to take on Konta’s successor as Britain’s No. 1. He has not had a coach since the deal with Andrew Richardson was not renewed after New York.

Carril has had a long-standing link to the British game and the Lawn Tennis Association. He has recently been with Katie Swan and was also briefly involved in the troubled LTA Academy project in Stirling.
