Teddy Sheringham has opened the lid on an extraordinary feud he had with Roy Keane at Manchester United which resulted in them never speaking.

The pair played together during Sheringham’s four-year spell at Old Trafford, while also being teammates at Nottingham Forest earlier in their careers.

Both players were big personalities in the locker room. Sheringham also famously got into a fight with strike partner Andy Cole, while Keane’s United career ended after a bust with Sir Alex Ferguson.

So maybe it’s no surprise that the two didn’t quite get along. As reported by the TimeIn a book due next week titled “1999: Manchester United, the Treble and All That,” Sheringham recalls a remarkable exchange during a bus trip from a night out with teammates in 1998.

“Suddenly Keany said, ‘Why don’t you go back to London in your bloody red Ferrari and your penthouse?'” Sheringham said. ‘I went ‘Uh?’ And he says, “Yeah, damn back to London”.

“I’m like, ‘Are you coming for me, Keany? Why are you coming for me, you Paddy? What the hell?” And he went “f*** off”, and he goes on “f***ing red Ferrari, penthouse…”.

‘Then he jumped over, still with his bad leg, grabbed me by the tie, pulled me towards him and wrestled with him. Suddenly everyone says “what’s going on?” and tear us apart.’

The England striker revealed that the pair did not speak for three and a half years

While United’s other players managed to split the pair, former England striker Sheringham says he thought the dispute would flare up again the following day.

“I couldn’t sleep that night and thought, ‘It’s going to go off as soon as I start training.

“I’ve seen Roy at the gym, so I know it could end. So I’m going to think, “Get ready”. I actually go in to think “I’m ready for him”.

“You have your own booth, so I was either next to Keany, or maybe the one after, and when I came in, he was there making his shoes. I walked past him and I think he’s going to stand up and kick me in the face. I think “here we go”.’

Instead, the Irishman decided to give his teammate the silent treatment.

“Keany gets up and walks out,” Sheringham said. “He didn’t say a word to me. He didn’t say a word to me for the next three and a half years.’

Despite the pair’s feud, United continued to be wildly successful during that period. They won the treble in 1999 and two more Premier League titles before Sheringham moved to Tottenham in 2001.

Keane wrote about Sheringham and his choice of car in his 2002 autobiography.

“Teddy arrived for training on his first day at the club in his red Ferrari, the confident Londoner in every way,” said the former midfielder. “The chemistry between us was never good.”

Sheringham doesn’t seem to hold a grudge, though, as he told TalkSPORT in 2019 that Keane was one of the two best players he’s ever played with.
