Former Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has warned Steven Gerrard that his honesty could ultimately prove his undoing.

Villa are currently 17th in the Premier League after just one win this season under Gerrard, who took charge last November with a contract until 2025.

The former Liverpool captain has spoken out publicly when their performances were not up to par and were not afraid to make bold decisions, such as stripping Tyrone Mings from the captaincy.

Former boss Tim Sherwood believes Steven Gerrard could be ‘too honest’ costing his job

But with plenty of key players out of shape for Villa, former boss Sherwood thinks Gerrard should play with the media rather than invite more unwanted pressure into his job.

“When Stevie (Gerrard) came into the club, he really grabbed me. He’s authentic, always speaks the truth and I’m amazed at the start they’ve made,” Sherwood told the Mirror.

“He’s honest in front of the camera, sometimes almost too honest, it doesn’t pay to be too honest (to the media).

‘But that’s the direction he wants to go, I did the same, always wore my heart on my sleeve. But eventually it takes its toll and you end up losing your job.

“He tries to take the pressure off the players, but when you do, the pressure comes to you.”

Gerrard’s case has not been helped by a new £26million Brazilian defender Diego Carlos, who was ruled out for months in his second appearance due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, which required surgery.

Sherwood added: “I think the team is out of balance and Diego Carlos’ injury has not helped, he is a huge loss.

“This season there have been big decisions made and Tyrone Mings taken off as captain of John McGinn – it was a stranger from the outside.

“But you never know what’s going on inside the club.”

Villa took credit for keeping Premier League champions Manchester City to a 1-1 draw last weekend to end a run of three consecutive defeats.

They now face a vital trip to Leicester at the bottom of the league table on Saturday as they try to pull themselves out of the relegation zone.
