If you’re craving a makeover, spas and hotels around the world offer packages that address your psyche.

The world of wellness is changing. After the pandemic, we seek much more than a fasting regimen and some yoga class when we go to a spa or retreat. Many of us are also crying out for an “emotional review.”

Spas and hotels around the world strive to offer packages that address your psyche and cellulite. You can choose the stylish spirituality in Spain or Italy. But here in the UK we already have a solid stretch of recalls that are the antithesis of fluffy towels and endless shakes. These are programs that have a great therapeutic impact.

They are certainly not for everyone, but if you feel the need for a revamp, here’s where to start …

Mandali opened in 2017 and is making waves with its dynamic retirement programs.

The setting is beautiful overlooking Italy’s Lake Orta to the Alps, and there are spa treatments available.

However, this is not just another spa experience with a little added emotional well-being.

The exclusive Mandali experience offers a gentle but deep exploration of your emotional well-being with meditation, breathing, workshops, group sessions, and mindful movement.

RESET SPANISH

Voted the best holistic hideaway in the 2020 Conde Nast Traveler Spa Awards, MasQi (or Energy House) is a 19th-century country house turned boutique hotel in Spain’s Sierra de Mariola. It’s both elegant and spiritual (a tough trick to pull off) and hosts a series of heartfelt emotional wellness retreats.

The four-day Reset program is an intimate dive (for just eight people) to help heal pandemic fatigue, the damaging effects of stress, and emotional blocks. It is a mix of meditation, movement, tutoring, and group sessions.

Meanwhile, Transforma offers a holistic six-night program that helps you put your life in perspective and move forward with more confidence.

Better for: Check out newbies who want a comprehensive reboot in a stylish setting.

Details: Reset withdrawal of £ 2,439 pp; Transforms from 2,005 £ pp (masqi.es).

GO ECO ON DEVON

Most emotional wellness retreats simply explore our relationships with ourselves and with the people around us.

But Embercombe, near Exeter, goes further and examines our relationship with nature. Nature is as masterful as the leaders in this beautiful Devon valley.

Learn about yourself by sleeping under the stars (or in yurts deep in the forest), swimming wildly in the lake, and getting up close and personal with trees, brambles, and mud.

Sitting around a campfire to share feelings offers gentle healing on its own.

Embercombe runs several retreats, but their flagship is The Journey, a five-day dive that helps you “get passionate about making the most of what life has to offer you every day.”

The Catalyst, also for five days, is a dedicated program designed for 18-29 year olds.

Better for: Eco-conscious people in search of meaning and with the goal of giving back to the world at large.

Details: The Journey from £ 997 pp with accommodation in a shared yurt; The Catalyst from £ 550 pp. Some scholarship places are available (embercombe.org).

The ‘Way of Love’ was established 26 years ago and tends to attract a younger audience (mainly in their 20s and 40s). There are places offering personal growth retreats all over the world, including at Broughton Hall, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

There is a fun feel with a resident DJ and sometimes there is a festival atmosphere. But tough love can be exhausting – some sessions go on for hours.

As a counterbalance, there are regular meetings in smaller groups to confront deep personal fears and guilty secrets.

By the end of the week, the group will probably know more about you than your family and friends. Lifelong friendships are forged, and guests generally fall in love with the world.

Better for: Those who want to feel more open and connected (with a secondary order of the club’s culture).

Details: Weekly stays from £ 2,377 pp (pathretreats.com).

SERENE SUSSEX

Florence House, pictured, in East Sussex is one of the Hoffman Process sites, which is not for the faint of heart.

The Hoffman Process was created in 1967, making it the venerable grandfather of all emotional healing retreats. Pop star Katy Perry loved it; Justin Bieber reportedly retired.

“Hoffman is not a pampering spa retreat,” warns the organization’s website. “There will be moments of intense emotional and physical experience.”

The process works with the understanding that, as children, we will do anything to be loved, which means that we acquire a number of useless belief systems and behaviors.

The Hoffman course sets out to address this, but it is not for the faint-hearted and there is an intense selection process to go through before being accepted into the course.

There are locations all over the world, including the Florence House in East Sussex.

Better for: High-level flyers full of anguish who feel that childhood traumas may be behind their problems.

Details: £ 3,500 pp for a seven day withdrawal (hoffmaninstitute.co.uk).

STRESS FREE SCOTLAND

The Penninghame process is included in a week-long retreat that takes place on a fabulous estate in Dumfriesshire. You are taught practical ways to change the way you think and feel. Devotees claim that it has helped them say goodbye to depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

The days begin with an intense meditation session designed to release pent-up emotions, and the entire week is carefully selected.

It’s not all gloomy introspection – some parts connect you to a sense of childlike fun. Saying you’re going on a journey is cliché, but it rings true: you learn to “become the hero of your own life.” Most leave feeling calmer and more confident.

Better for: Anyone open-minded to change, but new to therapy.

Details: From £ 1,595 pp for seven nights of all-inclusive accommodation (penninghame.org).
