SPECIAL REPORT: What’s going on so badly at Juventus?

Max Allegri must reverse Juventus’ disastrous start to the season, and quickly.

The comparison with his predecessors Maurizio Sarri and Andrea Pirlo is ruthless and reveals many faults that point the way for the 54-year-old in his second spell at the club.

After 10 Serie A games, Sarri scored 26 points and Pirlo scored 20. Alllegri, on the other hand, has only accumulated 15 points; they are simply too few for the Old Lady to be satisfied.

Juventus lost more ground to Serie A leaders Milan after a late loss at home to Sassuolo

Four wins, three draws and three losses is the record, scoring 14 and conceding 13. This time last year, they had conceded six fewer and scored four more. It is a damning charge.

Allegri, on his side, plays ugly and cynical football and therefore when victory is not achieved his teams’ performances are horrible.

Vice President Pavel Nedved’s anger in the final minutes of the loss to Sassuolo on Wednesday night is the photo that epitomizes Juve’s struggle right now.

The Czech legend yelled something at his teammate and club director Andrea Agnelli, who remained impassive, in a stadium frozen by Sassuolo’s goal in injury time. So where has everything gone so wrong?

A DEFENSE FILLED WITH LAGOONS

Increasingly, Juventus seems like a team without any identity.

The results confirm the regrettable decline of a club that won nine Scudetto titles followed by its solidity and confidence in the rear.

With 13 goals conceded after two more at home on Wednesday night, they are Juve’s worst first 10 games since the 1992-93 season, according to Opt.

One fact is particularly worrying: it is only the third time in the ‘three points a win’ era that Juventus have suffered so many defeats in their first 10 games.

Individual mistakes are also becoming a problem – at least five goals can be blamed on one person’s goal, and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is guilty of three of them.

Juve have also missed 10 points of advantageous situations and now, in seventh position, they have allowed Udinese, Milan and Napoli to overtake them in the table. The formidable pair of center-backs Leonardo Bonucci and Matthijs De Ligt need to figure it out.

AN ATTACK WITHOUT TARGETS AND IMAGINATION

A total of 14 goals in 10 games is very little for a team that wants to win the Serie A title.

Despite having four forwards on his team, his total sum is less than that of Lazio’s Ciro Immobile, who has eight, and the same as Edin Dzeko, who has scored seven.

It is a very serious problem, especially considering that Allegri has rotated all his options in an attempt to find a solution.

Without Cristiano Ronaldo, fans are anxious and impatient waiting for players like Federico Chiesa, Moise Kean, Paulo Dybala and Álvaro Morata to find the back of the net consistently.

Unknown quantity Mattia Destro is third in Serie A with six goals and, so far, the sum of the goals of Morata and Dybala in the Italian top flight is less than that of Genoa.

ALLEGRI’S RECORD LOOKS BAD COMPARED TO PREDECESSORS

Allegri’s numbers at this point in the season are not a good read compared to his predecessors Maurizio Sarri and Andrea Pirlo.

He has 11 points less than Sarri and five less than Pirlo. The home loss to Sassuolo highlighted the limitations of this team at the moment, as well as the structural shortcomings that have led to this embarrassing start.

Juventus have lost to players like Empoli and Sassuolo at home and some players just don’t seem right for the team at the moment – Frenchman Adrien Rabiot is one of them.

Morata, also back for his second spell, also seems lacking in confidence and personality.

Allegri should not be afraid to intervene tactically when necessary. Otherwise, a shapeshift really seems unlikely.

SQUABBLING AMONG THE TEAM

As seen on television cameras Wednesday night, winger Danilo seemed extremely nervous about his mistakes on the field.

In particular, he had a long confrontation with fellow Brazilian Kaio Jorge. The former Manchester City player spoke to the young forward for a while about positioning on the field.

At one point, Danilo put his index finger to his mouth and said, “Shut up and stay there.”

Shortly before, the defender had a word with goalkeeper Mattia Perin and defender Leonardo Bonucci about their own position on the pitch.

Panic and insecurity among the players is becoming a common theme in the Allegri team. You need a setback, across the board.
