OAKLAND, California (AP) – Snapchat stops “promoting” President Donald Trump on its video messaging service, the latest example of a social media platform that is adapting how it treats this US President.
Last week, Twitter posted fact-check warnings on two Trump tweets that called mail-in ballots “fraudulent” and predicted problems with the November election. It downgraded and posted a stronger warning on a third tweet about protests in Minneapolis, which read in part that “when the looting begins, the shooting begins.”
Snapchat’s action is more limited. It just means that the President’s posts will no longer appear in the ‘Discover’ section of the app, which will feature news and posts from celebrities and public figures. Trump’s account remains active on Snapchat and is visible to anyone who searches for or follows it.
The decision, taken over the weekend according to Snap – the owner of Snapchat – places the Santa Monica, California-based company in Twitter’s camp after that company escalated its actions against Trump.
Facebook, meanwhile, has left identical posts, although company and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is increasingly criticized for the decision.
“We will not strengthen voices that incite racist violence and injustice by giving them a free promotion on Discover,” Snap said in a statement Wednesday. “Racist violence and injustice have no place in our society, and we stand with everyone seeking peace, love, equality and justice in America.”
Snapchat has 229 million daily active users. Twitter has 166 million in comparison. Unlike Twitter and even Facebook, Snapchat is generally used as a private communication tool, with friends sending each other short videos and images and, to a lesser extent, following celebrities and other accounts.
In a tweet, Trump campaign leader Brad Parscale said that Snap CEO Evan Spiegel “would rather promote far-left riot videos and encourage users to destroy America than share positive words of unity, justice and our president’s law and order.”
