For the first time since 2017, Narbonne and San Diego Cathedral Catholic are no longer meeting in a CIF bowl competition. Narbonne was banned from the play-offs of the City Section and Cathedral Catholic lost in the play-offs of the San Diego Open Division.
The new matchup in the Division 1-AA state bowl game matches Southern Section Division 2 champion Sierra Canyon against San Diego Open Division champion La Mesa Helix on Friday in Helix.
Helix is the school that produced the Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton.
Helix is 11-1 and has conquered the loss of injury from his star that is declining Elelyon Noa. Sophomore Christian Washington has taken over and has rushed more than 1,000 meters.
This is a game that tells if Sierra Canyon and his group of talented young players are ready for Division 1 football in 2020. The Trailblazers are currently building annually for this moment.
Junior quarterback Chayden Peery has played 14 games with only one interception. It means he does what good quarterbacks do _ avoiding mistakes that hurt a team. He has passed 2,885 yards and 17 touchdowns.
But it is the defense that could bring a state championship to the Trailblazers (13-1). The defense team already closed two very good offensive teams _ Grace Brethren and Chaminade this season. Veteran linebacker JD Hernandez is up to 117 tackles. The secondary is excellent, led by DJ Harvey. And everyone's approach has been great.
San Diego vs. Los Angeles has produced a number of memorable games and this should be one again. The winner will go to Cerritos College on December 13 to play Fresno Central or El Dorado Hills Oak Ridge.
