Kelley was charged with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy at a daycare center run by Kelley’s family. In 2014, Kelley was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Kelley retained his innocence and urged a retrial. His lawyers argued that the investigation by the Cedar Park police department was inadequate and that Kelley’s litigation lawyer had a conflict of interest.

TO WRITE is a five-part series that examines the case from multiple angles and contains interviews with key figures on both sides.

Kelley’s sentencing of child sexual assault was overturned in November 2019 by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. In the same month, Kelley was officially acquitted.
