Semina Halliwell’s mother recalls daughter ‘collapsed’ on BBC documentation

The mother of a 12-year-old girl who committed suicide after being “groomed and raped” recalls how her daughter “collapsed and cut herself all over” before revealing she had been sexually assaulted.

Semina Halliwell, of Southport, died on June 12 this year after spending four nights in hospital.

Her mother, Rachel Halliwell, claimed her daughter was “traumatized” by a torrent of online and physical abuse following the alleged sex offense by a boy of a similar age on Feb. 25.

Rachel appeared in the BBC Three documentary Zara McDermott: Uncovering Rape Culture and claimed that Semina injured herself “all over her body” before telling her mother that she had been sexually assaulted.

She claimed that Semina was forced to send explicit photos online and that her alleged rapist put so much pressure on her that she eventually “gived in” and met him.

“Of course a lot happened that we didn’t know,” Rachel said. “But something had happened that made her very unhappy.

“It was the night before Mother’s Day and she came into the bedroom and cut herself all over. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. She collapsed and said to me “Mom, I was raped” and she sat down and told me everything.

“When it started, when the messages started online, Semina told me that she felt very pressured to send nudes and said, ‘He took so much in my head that I ended up just giving in and meeting him’. That’s a lot for a little girl that.’

A police investigation is underway and the cause of death has not yet been confirmed. The alleged rapist has denied the crime and no DNA evidence has been found.

Trinity, a friend of the 12-year-old, said Semina “thought no one believed her” and that it was “all her fault” after reporting the alleged crime to police.

“She thought no one believed her,” she said. “We knew and her family knew she wasn’t lying about it. I guess she just felt she didn’t know what to do, she couldn’t help it, [she thought] that it was all her fault.’

Rachel says Semina was “very funny, very bubbly and very talkative” before the alleged rape and barrage of abuse by her peers.

“Then it changed,” she said. “She was constantly on her phone, social media became massive in her life. If you said to her, “What are you doing on the phone,” she would say, “I’m talking to my friends, I don’t understand.”

Semina’s friend Trinity said, “There wasn’t a moment when she wasn’t on her phone. When you’re young, I think social media is the first thing you own, it’s the first grown-up thing you can do as a young person.

“Social media can be a good thing, but there’s another side to it that’s quite a dark side.

“You go on Snapchat, you post a picture of yourself with your friends and you get guys popping up saying, ‘Want to send a picture’ and want sex and stuff.

“You say no, but they keep pressuring you, they actually call you frigid and boring, say they don’t want to talk to you.

Semina was physically assaulted twice in parks near her home in Southport, Merseyside, a month after the alleged April event.

Shocking footage shared by Rachel at the time showed her daughter being beaten, kicked and dragged across the floor by a group of girls.

Semina committed suicide in September, and Rachel said “no parent” should ever endure the excruciating pain of losing a child.

‘Semina tried to kill herself. She spent quite a few days in the hospital until they put her in a coma on Thursday,” she recalls. “Then Saturday morning I held her hand and when I was with her she just left, there was nothing we could do.

“No one thinks they can lose a child, that happens to someone else, that’s on the news, I’ll never be, and here I am. No parent should have to experience that.’
