Alan Shearer has directed tributes to Walter Smith after his passing at the age of 73.

The Rangers announced the death of their former coach, who won 10 league titles as manager over two stints at Ibrox and who also managed Scotland, on Tuesday.

Shearer simply wrote: ‘RIP Legend’, while Sutton posted: ‘Really sad news to learn of Walter Smith’s passing. He was a true gentleman. Thoughts and prayers are with Walter’s family.

Shearer’s teammates, former Newcastle stars Shay Given and Joey Barton, also paid their respects to Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant.
