Rio Ferdinand has praised Declan Rice as the ‘best midfielder in the country’ after his excellent start to the season with West Ham.

The 22-year-old has played a vital role in the Hammer’s success so far this season, with David Moyes’s team in third place in the league standings after their 3-2 win against Liverpool.

Former Hammer Ferdinand has said something has ‘snapped’ at Rice since his involvement with England at Euro 2020.

The television expert told his Vibrate with five podcast: ‘He’s arguably the best midfielder in the country.

“He has dominated games, he has played with maturity. Euros, something has clicked on it differently.

“His management of the game, the way he can change the pace of a game at times, we saw that in Newcastle earlier in the season. He has scored goals now. There is a maturity in his game for someone so young that he still has levels left. ”

Ferdinand said it would be difficult for any club looking to sign Rice because of the expected fee.

Ferdinand was then asked if he realized he was “good enough” during his own career while playing for England alongside the likes of Paul Scholes and David Beckham.

He replied: ‘I knew I was good enough at West Ham, I always felt like I could get to the top and there are more levels to me; Declan probably feels the same way.

‘Why would you want to leave West Ham right now? They are third in the league. For someone to get you out of West Ham, you will have to pay a lot of money.

‘That’s the problem that anyone is going to have now because they probably could have caught it because I don’t know if they really pushed the boat and spent £ 50 or 60 million in the summer.’

‘Moyes said at the weekend: £ 100 million and you’ll probably still get a no. I don’t know if it was a joke, but that’s what he said.

Rice has been strongly linked to a move to Manchester United, and experts and supporters have spoken of the club’s need to sign a defensive midfielder.

The 22-year-old has scored a goal and provided three assists to the Hammers, who are just one win away from league leaders Chelsea.
