Red Bull boss Christian Horner admitted that he “aged about 25 years” during the dramatic climax of the United States Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen executed Red Bull’s aggressive strategy to claim his eighth win of a season and potentially claim his first title, as he is 12 points ahead of rival Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton beat Verstappen, who took pole at turn one, but didn’t have the speed to make a significant gap.

Verstappen then stole the lead with an early stop, and while Hamilton, with a younger tire in the final stages, slipped seven seconds away from the Dutchman’s lead for a thrilling climax, he was unable to pose a real threat.

Horner could only watch and wait while his pilot was chased by the Briton, claiming the experience “ aged him about 25 years. ”

“I really didn’t think I was going to do that,” Horner told Sky Sports, after the race in which Red Bull’s Sergio Perez also finished third.

But in the end, the Briton never got close enough to Verstappen to attempt an overtaking.

Lewis had eight laps of newer tires, and the first set of hard tires to come off was practically down to the canvas.

‘We thought we weren’t going to have much at the end here, but Max managed that tire in the final period.

“ You know Lewis at the end of the race is very strong and he had gone a long way and he got an advantage.

“I think losing in the final laps would have been really painful, but Max held on, did a great job, managed it very smartly and in the end he had enough.”

Hamilton finished 1.3 seconds behind his fierce rival Verstappen, who won the US Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Verstappen seems to have a more enjoyable experience, describing the last lap as “fun” and “exciting”.

“Of course we lost at the beginning, so we had to try to do something else,” he said.

“The tire wear is pretty high on this track, we were aggressive and I wasn’t sure it was going to work, but the last few laps were fun. A little sideways in high speed corners, but very happy to hold on.

‘It was exciting. Throughout the race there was pressure, not knowing how fast Lewis was going to take you. It’s amazing to win here. ‘
