A fashion-loving sports podiatrist who spent a decade researching the cause of high heel-related foot pain said her wedding day led to her big break.

Emily Smith, from Sydney, Australia, was in pain after wearing stilettos all day.

She couldn’t walk, but the pain prompted her to make an insole to make wearing high heels comfortable.

“What I found was that the stabilizing muscles of the ankle were so fatigued that they failed,” Ms. Smith told FEMAIL.

“From there, I worked backwards and found that the feet naturally roll outwards instead of inwards when you wear heels.”

She had a lightbulb moment the day after her wedding, when she couldn’t walk for hours from wearing high heels, and came up with the solution to wear heels in comfort.

Ms Smith’s interest in high-heeled foot pain started when she was a student at Western Sydney University.

She did her graduate thesis on the subject in 2005, but was unable to find any new evidence to alleviate the pain caused by high heels.

Ms Smith then began working as a podiatrist in Mosman in Sydney’s northern suburbs and saw countless women complaining of sore feet for over 10 years.

She understood their love for the stylish footwear, so she didn’t want to say that they should ditch the heels altogether for more ergonomic, old-fashioned shoes.

“I was never one to say you have to be in these granny shoes,” she said.

“I would never wear them, so I wouldn’t expect my patients to wear them either.

Smith’s research and her 2010 marriage led her to create the Emily Braidwood Medigel insoles for high heels and flats.

The product idea was an unlikely undertaking for a sports podiatrist, but Ms. Smith said the science “traverses a lot.”

“As with sports injuries, it all came down to the muscles getting tired and burning out very quickly,” she said.

Stretch your calf and shin muscles before wearing heels

Roll your foot under a ball just after removing them and a few times the next day – apparently a cold bottle of wine works a treat too.

Retreat to high heels – don’t go for your highest stilettos right away

Do calf raises to prep your muscles – Ms Smith says you can do these while brushing your teeth at night

Don’t squeeze your feet into heels; try going half a size up instead of down

Swap the stilettos or thinner heels for a firmer heel
