A herd goes into shock! Photographer captures the moment when 5,000 birds create an exclamation point in the sky

A flock of birds made a spectacular call to birds when a predator swooped in to kill — forcing them to form the shape of an exclamation mark.

Photographer Nuray Gonulalan was amazed when she looked up to see the familiar punctuation mark — often associated with shock or panic — hovering above her.

She grabbed her camera and captured the pack of birds in their striking formation as they desperately tried to escape in Lake Mogan, Ankara, Turkey.

Mrs. Gonulalan said: ‘It was an incredible opportunity to catch the sign, which is recognized by all.

“It was my lucky day, I got a lot of pictures from this event. Nature was very generous to me that day.’

Nuray had been waiting patiently, hoping to photograph a rare bird, when she saw the soaring swarm out of the corner of her eye.

But after being distracted by the group’s astonishing shape, she quickly turned her attention to the flock of about 5,000 birds.

She said, “It was almost like they were screaming for help—just like you’d see in a cartoon.

‘There were between 4,000-5,000 Sturnus Vulgaris birds that determine their flight direction by the sun. When the predator moved in, they started making interesting shapes and flying formations to avoid it.

‘It was an incredible sight, I will never forget it. it was a visual feast that changed every second. I couldn’t stop watching to the end.’
