PASADENA, California – With most traditional shuttered movie theaters, drive-ins are all the rage. And now there is a new player in the city, at least temporarily.

Tribeca Drive-In will open a store at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, screen a series of 30 films, and host live comedy from July 2 through Thursday through Sunday, August 2.

“We are looking forward to the reopening of cinemas and hope that the Drive-In recalls the magic of the cinema experience,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises and the Tribeca Film Festival, which a Drive as part of the fest for 20 years. The Drive-In is expanding this summer, she said, “as an immediate and safe solution” to continue enjoying the movies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the films shown in the Rose Bowl: musical-themed films, including Selena, The Bodyguard and Straight Outta Compton; sports themed movies, including Creed, Jerry Maguire and Space Jam; the James Bond classics Goldfinger and Casino generous; high school comedies Mean girls and Super bad; a 45th anniversary screening of Jaws; and children’s films, among others.

Palm SpringsA darling of critics at the Sundance Film Festival 2020, it will also be shown as part of the Drive-In series, which includes performances by filmmakers and actors, teasers for upcoming films and stand-up comedy.

In collaboration with the independent production company Comedy Dynamics, the Rose Bowl will hold four evenings from 9 to 12 July. The performances will incorporate film into the live acts of the comedians, which Tribeca organizers say is a ‘first of its kind experience’.

Pasadena’s Rose Bowl is one of many locations around the country where the Tribeca Drive-In series is held. AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas; Nickerson Beach in Nassau County, New York; and Orchard Beach in the Bronx, New York, are among the other host sites. Tribeca also hosts National Football League-themed events at NFL stadiums in Dallas, Miami and Seattle. Drive-In organizers say they will announce additional locations in the coming weeks.
