Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leads Manchester United into Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool admitting that his team is not on the same level as its rivals.
United finished second last season as Liverpool’s title defense collapsed around them, with Jurgen Klopp’s team finishing fourth. But Solskjaer admits that United were lucky to finish ahead of Liverpool and still need to improve.
“It will take everything to get results against the best teams in the world and Liverpool are one of them,” said the United manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Manchester United are still not at the level of Liverpool
‘They are one of the teams we are chasing. What they have done in the last four years is something we strive for and try to overcome.
“We finished above them last season, but they had a very bad streak, perhaps due to bad luck with injuries, now they are back to their best level. We haven’t won the league in the last eight years.
“You can understand that Manchester City or Liverpool walk to the field and think that quality is enough. We have players who need to keep improving and developing ”.
United finished ahead of their archrivals last season, securing a second place in the top flight.
However, Solskjaer claims his United side still lags behind the former Premier League kings.
A Liverpool win on Sunday would put them seven points ahead of United, but Solskjaer thinks it’s too early to talk about the title race.
“Being seven behind is going to be a great distance, but if we win it would be a point,” he added. “It’s so early in the season, every game is equally important.”
Liverpool have scored at least three goals in each of their away games this season and Solskjaer added: ‘Liverpool are in great shape, showing some individual skills that you can hardly defend yourself against.
Solskjaer’s Red Devils face the team in the form of Jurgen Klopp at Old Trafford who need three points
Liverpool are unbeaten so far and will arrive at Old Trafford in good spirits on Sunday.
“As a team, we have to be compact, aggressive, with a strong mindset and physical energy.”
Coming off two goals against to beat Atalanta 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday, United’s performance summed up much of their season thus far.
But Klopp said: ‘With the quality that they have, they can be dangerous. I am preparing for a difficult match ”.
Solskjaer added that the talisman Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for Liverpool’s visit
