Eddie Howe has hinted that he could build his Newcastle squad around ‘incredible manager’ Jonjo Shelvey.

The new manager has made it through the international break in training camp with his squad and will take over his first home game against Brentford on Saturday.

Howe wants to implement an attacking style at St James’ Park and thinks he has the players to do it, making specific reference to former England midfielder Shelvey.

When asked if anyone in the group has surprised him since he took office, the head coach said: ‘I’m only picking one, for example, Jonjo Shelvey.

“ I knew how good Jonjo was with the ball technically, having played against him and seen him many times. When you work with him, you realize that he is an incredible coach and that he can pass all over the field, long and short.

“He is someone I have looked at, in terms of our philosophy and how we want to play, and he will be very important to us as the season unfolds.”

Shelvey, 29, spoke to Sportsmail last month in the days following the Saudi-led takeover and admitted he was fighting for his future at the club.

‘I have 18 months left on my contract, so it’s up to me to show the people in charge who I am. I have to take care of number one, it’s my career, ‘he said.

Howe praised the midfielder as an 'incredible manager' before his first game in charge.

‘So it’s stressful, but I’m a positive person and will try to seize the opportunity with both hands. There is excitement and nerves, I guess.

Howe cautioned that it will take time to change the philosophy of the game, but says fans should notice a difference this weekend.

“The basic fundamentals of how we play, I would like to think that you will see them tomorrow,” he said. “I would like to think that you will see a Newcastle team playing the way I want to, in a way that is consistent with what Newcastle fans also want to see.

‘How fast can we get there? Well we’ll see. But I would like to think that you would see a team playing for the jersey, the fans, the crest and making the team and the city proud.

“We have tried to implement our philosophy consistently. We don’t want to overload the players too much, but we definitely want to shape the team the way we want to move forward. I was very impressed by the response and the attitude of the players ”.
