Eddie Howe called Joelinton an ‘outstanding talent’ and admitted he was shocked by his potential after taking charge of his first training session at Newcastle in 2021.

Joelinton struggled to form when Howe came on the scene. It took the Brazilian 26 games and 39 shots to score his first goal and only managed to add five more to his tally in his first two seasons with the club.

However, Howe managed to revive Joelinton’s career by changing his position. The Newcastle boss saw something no one else did and pushed the forward into midfield.

Joelinton’s influence in the middle of the field was crucial. He became one of Newcastle’s best players, not only defensively, but also offensively.

He won more dogfights than any other Newcastle player during the 2021-2022 season. He also recorded more interceptions, clearances and tackles than Newcastle’s recorded forwards.

Howe admitted he was proud of Joelinton’s improvement, but insisted it was the player who should be credited.

Speak with Alan Shearer via the athleticHowe said, “Seeing a player do well — and improve dramatically in Joe’s case — is a great source of satisfaction, but the credit is with him.

He added: “I remember seeing him during our first training session and thinking, wow, what a player he is. I didn’t know too much about what had happened to him here, but that first impression was of an extraordinary talent who also seemed like a really good guy. My opinion hasn’t changed.’

Howe also touched on his relationship with Allan Saint-Maximin, explaining how he makes the most of the 25-year-old star.

The Newcastle boss said: ‘With someone like Allan [Saint-Maximin]What I’ve tried to do is understand how he thinks, what he needs to be the best he can be.

“From that point on, I work backwards. And that’s where I say being able to manage my emotions well helps in those situations where you might be frustrated.

“You put that aside and think, ‘What does he need to help him?’ I’ve been able to condition my brain to think like that.’
