Southampton winger Nathan Redmond has completed a transfer to Turkey’s Besiktas.

The 28-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with the Istanbul-based side, with Redmond ending a six-year stint on the south coast.

Redmond, who originally joined the Saints from Norwich City in the summer of 2016, has recently had limited playing time and was considered redundant.

He made just 15 appearances for Southampton in 2022, including just one late cameo as a substitute on the opening day of the new season in a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham.

The former Birmingham City player made 232 appearances for Southampton, scoring a total of 30 goals.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl insists Redmond is leaving the club on good terms – the 28-year-old has posted a lengthy Instagram message to supporters who spoke fondly of his time at St Mary’s Stadium – and can now start making an impact in Istanbul.

“It’s a good change for him, after six years maybe it was time to buy him something new,” said the Southampton manager.

‘We had a fantastic time here together, almost four years, with many very good moments, sometimes not so good.

“But I definitely had a good relationship with him right up to the end, he showed his professionalism there too at such moments.”

Hasenhuttl said at a press conference: “I’m really looking forward to seeing him play there, for us we are all moving forward and going through life changes.

“It’s a big change for him, but I think he made a good choice.”
