Lorenzo Insigne scored and helped Napoli to a 2-0 win over Fiorentina to help advance to a top four Serie A finish and Champions League football next season.
The win puts Gennaro Gattuso’s side at 76 points, one point ahead of AC Milan and Juventus in fourth and fifth place respectively, before Milan hosts Cagliari later on Sunday.
Napoli is guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League when they win their last game of the season at home against Hellas Verona next Sunday.
Juventus had beaten champions Inter Milan on Saturday to come out above Napoli, who therefore traveled to Florence to take a win to ensure they advance to the final round in one of four Champions League qualifying positions.
Napoli was frustrated with the 13th-seeded hosts in the first half when goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano fended off Piotr Zielinski’s attack and Insigne’s free kick rattled the bar, while Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic closed a header for offside.
Insigne’s tame spot kick was saved, but he shot into the rebound, and Italy’s winger was close to a second when he was again denied by the woodwork with a low shot hitting the post.
Napoli doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Insigne delivered a pass to Zielinski, whose first attack took a big deflection from Lorenzo Venuti on his way in and was awarded as an own goal to round out the points.
The breakthrough came at 57 minutes when Napoli was awarded a penalty for a shirt from a corner after a VAR review, and Viola substitute Bartlomiej Dragowski was shown a straight red card for protesting the decision.
