MSI GE76 Raider UH11, review: if you think about the latest hardware for a beastly gaming laptop, you will be right

The segment of the purest gaming laptops has one of its great bastions in the GE family of MSI. We are talking about teams whose main mission is to be the benchmark gaming PC at home.

The new MSI GE76 Raider, which combines the latest generation Intel Core i9 processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 graphics, is presented in society as a pure gaming laptop where the current maximum power to play is accommodated in a robust chassis that collects a screen of 17.3 you inch with 360 Hz refresh. But everything has a price.

Very robust metallic finish

Almost everything that a consumer can associate with a pure gaming laptop in the field of design can be found in this MSI GE76 Raider. There is only one exception: the mechanical keyboard.

The new MSI GE76 Raider has a robust metallic finish under a serious design of some thickness and weight.

This MSI GE76 Raider is a great laptop with a 17-inch screen and a certain thickness and weight: 2.6 cm and 2.9 kilograms. Being a laptop logically we will be able to take it with us if we want to, but we must think of this MSI GE76 as a stable gaming device. On a table, it is the best it is, without taking up much once unfolded and with the ease of hiding it when we are not using it. And all this without, as we will see, much lacking the power to play after dinner.

The MSI GE76 Raider has a relatively sober and elegant design where the robustness and the excellent finish thanks to the use of aluminum stand out. With straight lines, it is a gaming laptop that is pleasant to the eye and to the touch.

gaming laptop

The touch of distinction is found on the front, where there is an LED lighting band that covers the entire length and thickness of the equipment and is part of the RGB lighting system that also includes the Steelseries keyboard. That lighting is logically controllable (and allows it to be completely disabled) in the corresponding MSI app.

Ready-to-go connectivity

Taking advantage of the rear of the laptop, which does not end right where the screen hinge is located but collects a bit more space, MSI endows this GE76 Raider laptop with high connectivity.

Connectivity, even wireless, is designed to make the most of the Internet and complement your screen with external monitors

Right in that back part, we have the bulk of the connectivity at the image output level. There is a MiniDisplayPort 1.4 port, a USB-C 4 (Thunderbolt 4 and Displayport), and an HDMI output (8K @ 60Hz / 4K @ 120Hz), in addition to the proprietary connector for charging, which is a 280W adapter.

On the left side, there is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 type A port and another USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, in addition to the combo type audio input/output.

On the other side of the equipment, there is room for two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, as well as an air vent. On the right side, we also have an SD Express card reader, which achieves transfer rates of up to 985 MB / s.

If with the Ethernet port we have guaranteed excellent connectivity to play wired, doing it wirelessly is not unreasonable as this MSI includes Killer Wifi 6E connectivity (AX1675 adapter) and Bluetooth 5.2.

MSI does not neglect the webcam excessively and opts for a configuration with 1080p resolution and 30 fps

We finish the connectivity section talking about the webcam, which, as we have seen, has been a point of tension between manufacturers and consumers for a couple of years. In this MSI GE76 Raider, we have to congratulate ourselves that we can talk about a webcam well located in the upper frame and with sufficient quality for the objective of this team: 1080p at 30 fps.

FullHD screen at 360 Hz

Arrived at this level of equipment in regards to the gross power in the best gaming laptops on the market today, the great unknown arises when choosing the panel to enjoy the equipment.

FullHD screen at 360 Hz

Usually, the manufacturers, with the same starting base, offer several solutions for the player. The model that we have analyzed is the manufacturer’s reference and the only option for now in the Spanish market.

The 17.3-inch panel focuses on the gaming experience with high refreshment. It is a FullHD screen at 360 Hz

The MSI GE76 Raider 11UH, its official and complete name, offers the consumer a 17.3-inch panel with FullHD resolution. Its strong point, in addition to fidelity and good calibration, is the refresh rate of 360 Hz.

That frequency, as we will see, is far from what this laptop is capable of offering in optimal conditions (maximum panel resolution and high graphics) unless we are referring to very basic esports games. Only in those cases will we take advantage of it.

For now, for those who want more resolution, there is only the option of resorting to an external screen, for which, as we have seen at the connectivity level, this team is perfectly prepared.

The panel, with 300 nit brightness and sRGB color coverage, offers a somewhat fair sharpness for a panel with such a diagonal, something that is soon appreciated when we are not playing and we want to take advantage of the team with other more ” classic work ” tasks.

The behavior of the screen can be slightly modified using the MSI True Color application, being able to choose between different display modes (game, cinema, sRGB …) and even calibrate it if we have the appropriate tools.

Strong sound to play

A quite prominent section of the MSI GE76 Raider is found in the sound. We have a Dynaudio system with a passive radiator, which is made up of two front elements located on the sides of the keyboard as well as two other speakers on the sides, next to the lower corners.

The placement of the 4 speakers and a correct bass boost give an extra value to the sound of this laptop to play

With this four-speaker system, the sound presence is very large, also offering a lot of clarity and good bass.

The MSI GE76 Raider has four speakers: two on the sides of the keyboard and another two, for bass, in the lower corners

On a technical level, it should be mentioned that this laptop offers sound with Hi-Resolution and also surround thanks to the Nahimic technology with SteelSeries touch.

Intel Core i9 and RTX 3080 to power

To put an engine room at the service of the MSI GE76 Raider, the Taiwanese manufacturer combines CPU and dedicated graphics of the highest level on the market. On one side we have the Intel Core i9-11980HK with overclocking capabilities and next to it, an Nvidia RTX 3080 with 16 GB GDDR6 and 165W.

Think of the latest in hardware components for a laptop and you have it in this MSI GE76 Raider

In case it was insufficient or rather to give good space and accompaniment to that brute force, the MSI GE76 Raider offers 64 GB of RAM (2×32 GB) DDR4 at 3200 MHz and a 2 TB NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 SSD that we could reinforce with other thanks to a second free slot (but already PCIe Gen3).

As expected, with this hardware configuration, the figures that this MSI GE76 Raider reaches in the different performance tests that we submit to our test equipment are the highest that we can currently achieve under the Intel consumer architecture.

In tests with PCMark 8, MSI’s new notebook scored over 10,000 points in the Creative test and 6850 in the Work test. With Cinebench R20, the notebook fell slightly below 5000 points, well above the 4200 points we recently achieved in our review of the ASUS ROG Strix G15 with the Ryzen 9 and RTX 3080.

The SSD, which as we have advanced works under PCIe 4, offers values of the highest level today, with more than 6500 MB / s and almost 4500 MB / s in reading and writing respectively.

On a graphical level, the RTX 3080 makes an appearance quickly. With her on the team, it’s rare that we want to (can) turn to the integrated solution to work with the team.

In tests with 3DMark, this MSI GE76 Raider reached 12,550 points in the TimeSpy test as well as just over 31,700 points with Fire Strike, again beating the Ryzen 9 and RTX 3080 combination that we tested.

fast gaming

MSI’s effort at the level of cooling in this team, with large air outlets and inlets to work together with two oversized fans (Cooler Boost 5), manages to control operating temperatures relatively.

Under situations of maximum stress, for example, playing games, the CPU marked us peaks of no more than 90 degrees, the temperature of the Nvidia GPU falling below 80 degrees.

The temperatures on the keyboard were concentrated on the right side, without becoming somewhat problematic when we played, a moment of maximum demand for the equipment at a thermal level.

The two large fans are the main source of noise from the computer. The operating speed, and therefore the noise generated, can be controlled by managing different usage profiles in the MSI application.

Only in the case that we use the maximum performance profile, the fans work at all possible revolutions, reaching in that situation about 45 dB, a high figure with which it is advisable to use headphones, but nothing crazy.

100 fps on average when we play

We quickly went on to check the real gaming performance of this combination of the latest generation Intel Core i9 for laptops with the RTX 3080 also focused on its use in these types of devices.

We performed the tests using the maximum resolution supported by the MSI GE76 Raider screen, setting the quality of the games to High or Very High, depending on the title.

In all the cases we have tested, we have always exceeded 60 fps. In fact, the analyzed title that offered the least performance was Red Red Redemption 2 with an average of 62 fps. In the rest of the level games, this RTX 3080 allows us to exceed 100 fps and even go much further.

With the RTX 3080 and the Intel Core i9, we can play most current titles above 100 fps, but the 360 Hz panel is only achievable with simple e-sports games.

We fear for example the 136 fps of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the 127 of GTA V, the 107 fps with CyberPunk 2077, or the more than 190 achieved in the test with Battlefield V.

As we anticipated when talking about the screen of this MSI GE76 Raider, to choose to get the most out of the panel at 360 Hz you have to resort to e-sports titles such as Apex Legends or FIFA21, with which we get rates of 250 and more 300 fps respectively.

A battery that suffers from so much raw power

If so far the review we have made of the operation of this MSI GE76 Raider presented us with an expensive gaming laptop but outstanding in performance, the tests and experience of use with the equipment in terms of autonomy have meant the ” quotation marks ” at the experience level of user.

The autonomy of this MSI GE76 Raider remains discreet despite its large capacity and associated resources

At another time, that a gaming laptop with this screen and hardware could not exceed three and a half hours of standard use, it would not be a problem in itself. But the improvement we have seen in similar equipment this year puts this MSI model somewhat behind.

In our tests, we have averaged between 2.5 and 3.5 hours with a basic workload (no gaming) and brightness at 50%, always with active connectivity.

Keep in mind that we are talking about a laptop with a battery with the maximum capacity possible today, 99 Wh, as well as a panel that “stays” in FullHD resolution and without overwhelming brightness.

The laptop, with its large charger with a proprietary connector, does not support charging via a USB-C port, which is always a small stumbling block for the assessment in this section.

Large keyboard very comfortable to play

The MSI GE76 Raider is another team from the Taiwanese manufacturer where we find the Danish signature of SteelSeries for the keyboard. We are not talking about a mechanical keyboard but with very excellent behavior when we play despite being a butterfly. It’s complete, with a numeric keypad included and full arrow keys!

The response of the keys is fast and precise, with a long journey but immediate feedback and above all an incredibly low loudness. It is possible to play without limitations without practically anyone being aware of it. And if you need to type in documents or social networks like crazy, it is also a great and comfortable keyboard for it.

The keyboard is backlit, in this case, individual RGB and controllable from the SteelSeries or MSI application. MSI has named the lighting system Mystic Light due to the combination of the individual light of each key with the light strip in the front area.

As we have seen in other large equipment, a touchpad of “standard” measures is almost ridiculous no matter how precise and sufficient it is for basic tasks. Something more dimensions would not have hurt him.

MSI GE76 Raider UH11, the opinion, and note of Engadget

If you do not have a budget limit to buy a gaming laptop, the MSI GE76 Raider UH11 is already positioned as one of the reference equipment in the segment at the gross power level. Its latest generation hardware, with the Intel Core i9-11980HK, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 16 GB GDDR6 (165 W), and PCIe 4 connectivity, take care that, by power, other than.

Also, the design and finish of the MSI GE76 Raider are at the highest level, also accompanied by a good cooling system, powerful sound, and SteelSeries keyboard, perhaps one of the most “personal” elements when choosing a team of this profile.

Most particularly, if autonomy is not a priority for you, we find it on the screen, where the model we have analyzed includes a FullHD panel at 360 Hz, something fair in specifications and where the competition can cause more damage.
