Thorny Mauricio Pochettino claims Chelsea are a ‘defensive team’ as he bristles when asked about the sheer number of shots PSG face compared to Champions League winners
- PSG have conceded five goals in the Champions League so far this season
- The Ligue 1 club signed full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes this summer
- But boss Mauricio Pochettino said the duo need more time to adjust.
- The Parisians also brought in Sergio Ramos and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma
Mauricio Pochettino got defensive about his defense when asked to explain why Paris Saint-Germain are conceding such a high volume of shots in the Champions League this season, compared to their rivals Chelsea.
The Ligue 1 side have conceded five goals in Europe this season, while Thomas Tuchel’s side have left just one beyond their defense.
The club made several high-profile signings this summer to bolster its defensive ranks, including full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.
Mauricio Pochettino was enraged when questioned about the high number of shots that PSG faces this season
But the PSG boss claimed they are attacking rather than defensive assets on the side and still need time to adjust to the club.
“Chelsea have a defensive team, they play in transition and against it,” Pochettino said. “We have signed two offensive full-backs, Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.
“The club has the ambition to play attacking football, we are going to have to find the defensive balance that allows us to control the ball well to be able to attack well.

There’s also the recovery side: how to organize after losing the ball, how to get it back under pressure, etc.
‘It is true, we are conceding a great volume of shots, but that is one of the characteristics of attack teams, having full-backs that bombard forward, they get into the rival area.
‘We are in a phase of understanding. An example: Hakimi has gone from being a full back to playing in four. You have to see when to attack and when not to. It takes time. ‘

The Parisians also captured Real Madrid veteran Sergio Ramos and Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma before the transfer window slammed shut.
But Ramos has yet to appear with the Ligue 1 giants after struggling with calf problems since joining the club as a free agent.
Meanwhile, despite being a stellar prospect after his Euro Cup heroics, Donnarumma has appeared only twice with PSG this season, with Keylor Navas often getting the nod on goal.
