Marvel heroes do not stray from video games: ‘Midnight Suns’ will be an RPG from the creators of ‘XCOM’
After the relative disappointment of ‘Avengers‘and with the expectation that is raising’Guardians of the Galaxy‘, it should not be forgotten that, to inspire video games, Marvel not only has movies under its belt. Comics are a splendid source of characters and plots with enormous commercial potential. At Firaxis Games, creators of acclaimed sagas such as’XCOM‘ and ‘Civilization‘, they seem to have realized and have announced, with trailer included, a tactical role-playing game starring heroes not so common in the MCU, such as Ghost Rider, Blade or Wolverine.
In it, Hydra revives Lilith, Mother of Demons, through a process that mixes magic and science, and the Avengers turn to the supernatural Midnight Suns to help them with the task. The new character will be the decisive one in this battle: Hunter, son or daughter of Lilith, protagonist of the game and configurable from scratch by the players. Through this character we can form and control teams to defeat Lilith.
The magic Marvel
The supernatural Marvel whose most visible element is Doctor Strange, but which includes a whole cosmogony of demons, hells and its own laws, has hardly been exploited by video games. ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ seems to want to remedy it and more than choreographed action inspired by the MCU, in the trailer we have a good amount of supernatural elements and characters that belong to that element. Jake Solomon, creative director, affirms that we will see 12 heroes of the house, and at the moment in the trailer appear Blade, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Magik, Ghost Rider, Wolverine and Nico Minoru.
The trailer does not reveal anything about the mechanics of the game (which we can see from September 1): Firaxis already anticipates that it will not be as tactical as an ‘XCOM’, although the turn-based combat will be preserved. According to Solomon, it has been completely redesigned, and the accent has been placed on the endless hordes of dozens of enemies that will attack the player. The game will arrive in March 2022 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
