Hughes, who has been out of work since he was fired by Southampton in 2018, believes United should do everything possible to hire Pochettino now and not take the interim route.
He told talkSPORT: “I think United have long coveted Pochettino.
I think he was drunk and eaten, I think he dated Sir Alex. I think that was well documented a few years ago.
“ I think he’s well thought out in the corridors at United, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the one they really want.
“Whether or not he can get to the club quickly, that’s a problem for them.
“In terms of resources, in order to get a top manager out of a top club, clearly United is one of the few clubs that can do that.
I think if he’s the man, they should go out and find him. This interim to interim position doesn’t seem like the right way to go.
But clearly, if they have to wait, they seem ready to wait. I feel like it’s Pochettino who they really want. ”
Hughes made 276 appearances and scored 99 goals for Manchester United during his career
But if United can’t get Pochettino now and are forced to hire an interim manager, Hughes, who made 276 appearances and scored 99 goals for United, says he would be interested in the job.
Former United player and former Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is also reportedly keeping an eye on developments at Old Trafford.
“It’s an opportunity to get into the biggest club in world football, in my opinion,” he told Sky Sports.
‘Those opportunities, you don’t let them pass you by, whatever the circumstances or the limits you set.
“At the end of the day, you look at the group that you have to work with and they are a very, very talented group of players.
“Any coach worth his salt would take a look at that group and think ‘yeah, maybe I can get a better tune out of them.’
“There are a lot of people at United who have my number and I still haven’t received a call.
“It’s a great position, one that many managers would be very interested in, myself included.”
