Manchester United should have prioritized a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window, according to Trevor Sinclair.

The Red Devils have struggled this season despite making big moves over the summer for Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side was dominated by local rivals Man City over the weekend, just two weeks after Liverpool also arrived at Old Trafford and defeated them 5-0.

Sinclair has said talkSport that United made a mistake by signing Sancho and Ronaldo but without bringing in a defensive midfielder.

The former Hammer said: ‘I go back to the summer when they made their signings, I didn’t think they needed a winger and I didn’t think they needed a forward. I said they needed a right back and a containment midfielder.

“Declan Rice, if you’re playing Scott McTominay or Fred, the performance gap on that Man United team would be huge, very different.”

Sinclair’s comments echoed those he made after West Ham’s win against Everton in October.

He said at the time: ‘Rice was playing (Abdoulaye) Doucoure at Everton, and he had just ruined Manchester United. He (Rice) left it in his shadow. Doucoure couldn’t get close to him.

“It was one of the most complete midfield performances I’ve seen in a long time, on the ball, off the ball, disciplined.

“He is 22 years old. If Manchester United could have someone like Rice, I don’t think we are having this conversation.”

Sinclair is not the only one who has praised the English international, with legendary Chelsea defender John Terry describing Rice as “the best in his position in world football.”

Manchester United have struggled of late, with the Red Devils losing four of their last six Premier League games.

Meanwhile, West Ham has had an impressive start to the season and ranks third in the standings, just three points off the top of the table.

Rice starred for the Hammers at the weekend when they gave Liverpool their first loss of the season in all competitions with a 3-2 win at London Stadium.
