Manchester United took their first blow in the pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino after Paris Saint-Germain reportedly turned down an approach to their coach.

Pochettino is United’s main target to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was fired as manager following a 4-1 conviction loss to Watford over the weekend.

United expressed in its statement following the firing that an interim coach would take the team until the end of the 2021-22 season before a permanent successor took over.

PSG manager Pochettino is believed to be interested in taking over the job immediately, despite United having talks with former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde about being an interim manager, but ESPN Report that PSG has ruled out United’s first approach.

With PSG in action at Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday night, the timing would seem odd, though it also doesn’t square with United’s commitment to the process of bringing in an interim until the end of the season.

The French giants are said to be unwilling to open discussions about Pochettino in the hours leading up to their big Champions League showdown against Man City.

Amid ties to a return to Tottenham in the summer, Pochettino, 49, signed a contract extension, which carried his contract in Paris until 2023.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Pochettino refused to rule out a possible midseason exit.

When asked if he would definitely stay in France for the remainder of a contract that expires in the summer of 2023, he said: ‘Football is about today, not tomorrow.

“Soccer is about results. You live in the present, it is not about living in the future.

‘We are in a business where the rumors are there. I fully understand what is happening.

‘We cannot talk about this because of my respect for my club and my respect for another club.

“What another club is doing at that moment is not my business, it is not my problem.”

Pochettino spent five and a half years at Tottenham until his dismissal in winter 2019, so he has extensive experience in the Premier League.

He was also the mastermind of a famous run to the 2019 Champions League final where Tottenham was narrowly beaten to Liverpool.

With doubts about the feasibility of poaching a coach like Pochettino mid-season and the complexities involved in doing so, United is still working on a plan to install a temporary boss to take over from interim Michael Carrick.

Ernesto Valverde has held talks with Manchester United football director John Murtough about an interim position, with the former Barcelona manager as an option if the club cannot remove Pochettino from PSG.

Ernesto Valverde is on a short list of candidates to become Manchester United’s interim manager if they can’t get Pochettino out of PSG.

Sportsmail revealed that Pochettino is ready to move to Old Trafford immediately as a replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United is still working on a plan to install a temporary boss to take over from caretaker Michael Carrick before making a permanent appointment at the end of the season.

The club has a short list of five candidates for the interim position and it emerged Tuesday night that former Barcelona coach Valverde is one of the names under consideration.

Valverde is currently out of work after leaving Barça in January 2020 and the 57-year-old Spaniard has been in talks with United’s director of football, John Murtough.

Valverde has the advantage of having worked for one of the best clubs in the world, but has no Premier League experience despite expressing interest in coaching in England.

The only time he has worked outside of Spain were two seasons at Olympiacos, and he landed the Barcelona spot after impressing in the second of two seasons at Athletic Bilbao.

Valverde is believed to only be an option for the interim position, and United have other candidates for the summer, including Pochettino, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers and Ajax coach Erik ten Hag.

Zinedine Zidane has also been linked, but it is understood that he is reluctant to move to Old Trafford and is more likely to be a replacement for Pochettino at PSG.

It remains to be seen whether Pochettino’s possible availability could change United’s mindset regarding an interim appointment, but news of the Valverde talks would indicate that, at the very least, they are keeping their options open.
