Ten Hag managed Dest at Ajax before the American moved to Barcelona for £23.5 million
Barcelona have put a £17million price tag on the US international, but United are hoping to strike a deal by offering the Portuguese full-back in exchange.
Dest played 72 games in two seasons at Nou Camp, after joining the club for £23.5 million from Ajax.
However, he was often a rotation option for Barcelona, but Sergi Roberto and Ronald Araujo were preferred by Xavi as right-backs during pre-season.
Dest previously played under Ten Hag in the Netherlands and this move follows the trend of the Dutchman signing players he has previously managed or seen up close in the Eredivisie, where the new United manager has spent most of his managerial career.
Meanwhile, Dalot supplanted Aaron Wan-Bissaka in United’s starting lineup last season, starting Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Brighton.
However, he was one of a number of players who have been criticized for their performance and now, along with Wan-Bissaka, appear to be available for transfer as well.
Dalot arrived at Old Trafford in 2018 but failed to convince, having only played 66 times for the Red Devils since his £17.4m move.
It remains to be seen whether Dalot or Dest would be happy to switch clubs.

United’s interest in the Barcelona right-back is despite their complicated pursuit of De Jong, with the transfer saga surrounding the midfielder dominated their summer.
The Dutchman is Erik ten Hag’s main target and played under him at Ajax, but United have encountered significant difficulties in getting the deal.
It looked like the deal was closed at some point after the Red Devils agreed a £63m deal with Barcelona.
But De Jong’s reluctance to leave the Nou Camp, along with significant complications with the Spanish giant’s finances with disputes over unpaid wages to the Dutchman, means the move is becoming increasingly unlikely.
The midfielder reportedly would not want to move to a club that is not in the Champions League, while Ten Hag’s team is playing in the Europa League this season.
And it could be about to get worse for United as Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £68m fee for the player, while De Jong is reportedly on the cusp of joining Chelsea.
