Rio Ferdinand criticized Manchester United for a ‘disgraceful’ performance in the first half against Liverpool, as United fans called for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be fired following a humiliating loss to Liverpool.

United were totally abject in the opening 45 minutes, conceding four first-half goals at home for the first time in 70 years and for the first time in Premier League history as Liverpool rampaged.

Naby Keita put the visitors 1-0 up in the fifth minute, before Diogo Jota added a second eight minutes later and Mohamed Salah scored twice in seven minutes before the break.

Such was Liverpool’s dominance that Ferdinand described the contest as men playing against boys.

“We are always going to pose a threat because of the people we have … but we are so easy to play that it is unreal,” he tweeted during the first half.

Many fans on social media echoed his sentiments, calling for Solksjaer to be fired, describing Sunday’s performance as a ‘disgrace’.

Some pointed out that United conceded more goals in the first 45 minutes against Liverpool than Chelsea in nine Premier League games so far and called for Antonio Conte, Erik Ten Hag or Zinedine Zidane to be named in place of Solskjaer.

United have not kept a clean sheet in 21 games and their defensive weaknesses came under scrutiny on social media, where some United fans identified Solskjaer and his coaching staff as the main culprits.

England women’s international Lianne Sanderson said United were so “sorry” that Liverpool did not even play particularly well to inflict a humiliating defeat on their rivals.

The mood was just as negative at Old Trafford, where several fans voted with their feet, coming out at halftime and during the second half after Liverpool added a fifth goal early on.
