Manchester United and Barcelona are among a growing number of major clubs monitoring developments with Manchester City’s rising star James McAtee.

The highly-rated McAtee is the latest creative talent to push through City’s youth ranks and push for a first-team spot, but with just 18 months on his contract, Europe’s elite clubs are preparing to jump.

United saw the 19-year-old attacking midfielder leave his youth squad as a child and have followed his progress closely, but they are not alone with Barca, Ajax, Atlético Madrid and Liverpool among a number of clubs showing interest as well.

Nicknamed the ‘Salford Silva’ due to his resemblance in style to former City star David, McAtee scored a hat-trick on Wednesday, his third of the season, during City’s UEFA Youth League loss to the Club Brugge. His performance highlighted the growing talent he possesses as he continues to impress the City’s coaching staff.

Coach Pep Guardiola is a confirmed fan and is eager to reward the teenager with the most playing time, but McAtee’s has some of the best players in Europe – Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden ahead.

The situation is alerting several major clubs, as it is considered that McAtee could become the next Phil Foden.

His quick feet, skill and eye for goal, having scored 15 in 14 games this season, have already prompted Premier League Brighton to express their willingness to bet on England’s under-20 international (as reported to early season).

The city remains committed to keeping McAtee, but recognizes that finding a way for him will be challenging. They turned down numerous loan inquiries over the summer and Guardiola spoke positively about wanting people like McAtee to stay and learn alongside his team.

Other great talents like Jadon Sancho have risked leaving City for a first-team platform elsewhere and City won’t want history repeating itself as far as McAtee is concerned.
