(Swim) pack up! With a lot of it U.S Working from home this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was a nice treat to go outside for a little vitamin D while scrolling through emails.
And what better way to put it in clothes that can take you from the beach to the boardroom? Meet MAI MIA, a multifunctional swimwear brand made from environmentally friendly fabrics, loved by Olivia Culpo and more fashionistas.
The reason the line’s bikinis are so versatile all boils down to how they function as layers that go perfectly with classic pieces of clothing.
“You can wear our suits by your pool, on your balcony, in your backyard, peek out of your button-down during Zoom calls, or sunbathe during your lunch break,” founder Sooo heo tells exclusively Stylish in honor of the brand new summer fall.
“I design with the intention of asking myself,” Can I wear this as a top with my other clothes? “Does this feel special and a little different from what is already there?” Explains the Parsons School of Design alum.
She also weaves influences from the runway and from her previous experiences at design houses such as Helmut Lang and Prabal Gurung in her swimwear with cut-out details, angled necklines, mesh inserts, cut-out neck pieces with contrasting straps, shiny gold rings and more.
“I like to challenge myself by taking a classic, proven style and tweaking it a bit to create something that feels unique and new, without compromising on functionality and fit,” says the Korean-American designer, who also time clocks at Inamorata, Baja East Swim, Wildfox Swim, Max Azria, Nasty Gal and NBD for Revolve.
As for the bicoastal cool-girl aesthetic? “The East Coast and the West Coast both have a version of the modern woman, a boss who is always on the go with a full schedule of meetings and places to go. Sometimes you are too busy to worry about a change of outfit, and you don’t have to. ‘
Heo’s favorite trends at the moment: “I like to balance an edgy statement piece with simple layers and the right accessories. Our Cut Out String Kini Top has long ties and little more flare, so I would pair them with biker shorts, sneakers and a cute bum bag for an easy daytime look, and swap the sneakers for sandals with strappy heels and a blazer for a night out ”, shares they.
MAI MIA donates 10% of all sales each month to various organizations that help fight for racial equality.
