Former Manchester United star Lou Macari has used the club’s own TV channel to criticize their summer recruitment, admitting he’s never ‘heard’ of transfer target Adrien Rabiot.

The 73-year-old went off script to question the French midfielder’s pursuit on MUTV – where it’s almost unheard of for guests to speak negatively about what’s happening at Old Trafford.

It evokes memories of Roy Keane’s infamous diatribe on the club’s official channel after the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in 2005 – ultimately leading to his departure from the club.

‘I had never really heard of him’, the former Scotland international said. Clubs spend millions of pounds scouting players across Europe, but no one else has made a move for this guy. Why do you think this is? I have a bad feeling about that man.’

The 73-year-old’s comments come after news that United’s £15 million hunt for Rabiot could be terminated due to wage demands from the player’s mother – who is also his agent.

According to Sports media set Rabiot’s move to Manchester has been a stumbling block due to personal terms, with his mother demanding more than the £6million he made at Juve.

Juventus fans are excited about Rabiot’s departure and hope the deal can be closed as soon as possible.

And just as happy as Juve to potentially see the midfielder’s rear, United supporters are frustrated by the announcement of the club’s interest, and join Macari in his criticism.

Many even took to Twitter to express their joy at the news that the move may not go through, with one fan writing: ‘Okay, he’s another wrong type of player we’re trying to buy and his stats are appalling’

Another added: ‘Party time if true’

And a third user questioned the logic of trying to push through a deal: ‘Where’s the power, literally? If someone tries to hold you over a barrel and demands something that is clearly indigestible, you walk away. Easy.’

According to ESPNRabiot has appreciated the calls from Erik ten Hag, who spoke highly of him, and the Dutchman has insisted on signing Rabiot after United lost to Brighton in the first game of the Premier League season.

Macari played more than 300 league games for United in an 11-year period between 1973 and 1984, scoring 79 goals.

Former United captain Keane has famously handed down a damning verdict on his team-mates after their heavy loss to Middlesbrough in October 2005.

After Rio Ferdinand had the ball stolen from him by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, he said: ,,It’s bad defense. Just because you get £120,000 a week and play 20 minutes well against Tottenham, you think you’re a superstar.”

He also said Edwin van der Sar should have saved Boro’s first goal, called Kieran Richardson a “lazy defender” and expressed his most damning verdict on Darren Fletcher.

He said: ‘I can’t understand why people in Scotland are so excited about Darren Fletcher.’

Keane was fined £5,000 by the club and just weeks later his contract was torn apart, and his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson has still not healed to this day.
