According to Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, Liverpool should have signed Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer instead of Darwin Nunez.

Bee talisman Toney spent two years with the League One outfit, scoring 49 times in 94 appearances for Posh before joining Thomas Frank in 2020 for an initial fee of £5million, possibly rising to £15million with add-ons.

Since then, he has excelled in West London, scoring 52 goals in 96 games, including five in six this season, leading to strong calls for Toney to be called up to the England squad.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has claimed Liverpool should have signed Brentford forward Ivan Toney for more than £85m this summer to sign Darwin Nunez.

Meanwhile, Liverpool spent £85million on Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez this summer after the former Benfica star scored 34 goals in 41 games last season.

He has scored twice in five games in all competitions so far this campaign, but was sent off for violent conduct against Crystal Palace in Gameweek Two.

And MacAnthony, who is a Liverpool fan himself, hinted that the Reds should have signed Toney rather than Nunez, while claiming the Brentford forward would do well at Anfield with the service of Reds fullbacks Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

The Posh chairman said: The hard truth podcast: “Let me ask you the following question. Darwin Nunez, £85 million, Ivan Toney. Who is the better number nine?

“Nunez might have a great career, he could do very well for Liverpool, Liverpool like to be direct – let’s not joke that Liverpool is a direct football team, all our goals come from fullbacks and crosses.

‘We are a bit direct and that suits us, there is nothing wrong with that. You tell me that an Ivan Toney on the Liverpool team wouldn’t score 25 goals if those fullbacks did. Get rid of it!’
