Lionel Messi fans have taken to social media to protest the rejection of the Argentine great’s Ballon d’Or after it was revealed he was not part of a 30-man shortlist for the award.

Supporters of the 35-year-old PSG forward have declared the award ‘done’ in response to the news, with many shocked that he has missed out on 14 goals and 16 assists in 36 appearances for the Parisians in all competitions.

Messi, who has won the award on a record seven times, is not on the first list for the first time since 2005 – but his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo has not won silverware at the age of 37.

The majority of fans on Twitter were amazed that the ever-present Messi was left out, and many have ridiculed the list with one fan writing: ‘Messi was not nominated lmfaoooo wtf.’

Another questioned the future of the Ballon d’Or, adding, “Joke raid no longer believable.”

A third fan agreed, saying, “No apology needed. Not giving the award for best striker and Messi not in the top 30 only proved what the majority of the professional players and we claimed. Direct robbery.’

And a fourth mocked the shortlist by writing: ‘Wtf man they can contain ronaldo but not messi????? This is fucking robbery, this utter disrespect.’

Twitter user @GT_MessiFC added: “If Messi and Neymar are not in the Ballon d’Or nominees, the award is officially over.”

But not all fans on Twitter have thrown themselves into the defense of arguably the greatest player of all time, and many revel in his setbacks.

Unsurprisingly, the social media platform is full of comparisons to Portugal’s legendary five-time winner Ronaldo, given the long-standing rivalry the two shared on the pitch.

Twitter user @cristixnoera wrote: ‘Lionel Messi fails to make the Ballon d’Or Top 30 at 35, while Cristiano Ronaldo makes it at 37 to play for the worst Manchester United team in ages. Exceptional. Timeless. Special,” followed by a goat emoji.

But the Manchester United forward isn’t the only player fans have compared Messi to, with one fan writing: ‘Sebastian Haller nominated for Ballon D’or, but not Messi or Neymar, may have to pick a new sport to follow.’

Another said: ‘Nunez nominated but Messi not nominated? wtf.’

However, one fan was convinced that this stupidity wouldn’t be the end of Messi, simply by saying, ‘Revenge tour is coming, we cool.’

And the 35-year-old isn’t the only high-profile absentee from the list, and was joined by PSG teammate and Brazilian talisman Neymar, with Champions League and LaLiga winner and top scorer Karim Benzema favorite for the award.
