KRIS COMMONS: So will Steven Gerrard return for his Ibrox stars? Don’t bet on that! There are NO outstanding players on the Rangers team that will make your Aston Villa team better
- Steven Gerrard traded Rangers for Premier League Aston Villa this week
- It would be a surprise to see him storm his old club looking for players in the January window.
- There are no outstanding players in the Gers squad that improve Aston Villa
- Given the Rangers’ finances, the club’s board would not dissuade him from trying.
The first thing any new coach will look at is the shortcomings of the team he has inherited.
If they think there is a ready-made solution when signing a player from the club they just left, they will tend to look no further.
Given they posted an operating loss of £ 23.5 million last week, I imagine the Rangers board wouldn’t exactly put off Steven Gerrard if he opted to come up with some offers for his now-ex-players in January.
Steven Gerrard left Ibrox for Aston Villa after a three and a half year stay in Glasgow
Many now wonder if he will return to Ibrox to rob characters like Captain James Tavernier.
I just think that these discussions will not take place. Not because there are no talented players at Ibrox. Clearly there are. But none of them are guaranteed to improve Villa.
Gerrard’s new team has the third worst defensive record in the Premier League. If you’re going to stay in the league, you need to have a better foundation.
Rangers who stand out defensively are James Tavernier, Connor Goldson and Borna Barisic. But are they going to improve Villa? It would be extremely doubtful of that.
Nathan Patterson could go for a lot of money at some point, but I don’t think it’s for Villa, simply because they have Matty Cash, who I think is an excellent right-back.
Listen, Patterson is a real talent, but he’s more of one for the future. Right now, Villa needs proven and reliable players to get them out of this hole.
The one who has stood out in the last 12 months in midfield has been Glen Kamara. But he’s not the type of player who’s going to score you a lot of goals to keep you in the division.
Top Rangers players like Connor Goldson (above) would not improve Aston Villa’s team
Borna Barisic (right) is another of the Rangers’ most impressive players during Gerrard’s reign.
Gerrard posted a heartfelt message for Rangers fans on social media Thursday.
Ryan Kent is still gaining experience and learning his trade. He doesn’t stick every week and he’s had a couple of injuries. He’s not going to score you 20 goals a season on a regular basis.
I would see it as a gamble in that sense. He is not a proven player. It is still more of a prospect.
Villa needs goals. Alfredo Morelos could go get you the 15 you need and destroy them there.
But what is always detected with Villa is unity and team spirit. Would Morelos be guaranteed to help the environment in the locker room? Gerrard knows that he is very demanding. It would be a great gamble. And he’s not playing particularly well right now, either.
I just don’t think there is an absolute A on the Rangers team that would make Villa any better.
There are no outstanding players from Gerrard’s Rangers team that would make Villa better
Put it this way. There have been so many rumors in the last 12 months about Morelos, Kent, Goldson and Barisic, but no one has bought them. So I don’t see why that changes just because Steven Gerrard is now Villa’s boss.
Although Villa has had a hard time, he finished 11th in the Premier League last season, so he clearly still has a lot of good players.
With Gerrard’s contacts in England, and simply his presence, there will be no shortage of players who want to play for him.
The Rangers may want to go back and spend some money on their players, but the world is very big.
