Joe Daniher nearly missed the birth of his first child after storming home from Melbourne on Friday and arriving at the hospital with just 30 minutes left.

The hero of last week’s elimination final over Richmond, the Lions forward missed his team’s epic 14.8 (92) to 11.23 (79) win over the Demons in the semi-finals at the MCG after taking personal leave taken to return to Brisbane.

And Lions CEO Greg Swann revealed that Daniher was only in the hospital for ‘half an hour’ after flying back to Queensland.

“He was probably a bit unlucky Joey,” Swann told 3AW on Saturday morning.

“They had gone to the gynecologist on Wednesday and he had said, ‘Look, the baby is pretty high – there are no dramas that the baby will come at this point’.

“He made it in half an hour, which was great! It was just a bit of bad luck – 24 hours anyway and he would have been fine [to play on Friday night].

Daniher and his partner welcomed a daughter and Lions coach Chris Fagan confirmed the forward will be back in the squad for Brisbane’s preliminary final against Geelong on Friday night at the MCG.

“Joey and his wife had the baby, so I’m glad he was able to go home. They had a daughter,” he revealed Friday night after the game.

“It’s win-win for us – we’ve got a new Joey Daniher for next week and we won tonight, so you couldn’t have a better day than that.”

The Lions emphatically expelled their MCG hoodoos by wiping out a 22-point deficit against the reigning prime ministers.

It was Brisbane’s first win over the MCG since 2014, ending a run of 11 losses and four consecutive defeats to the Demons averaging 44 points over the past two years.

The Lions are now in a preliminary final against little prime ministers Geelong as Melbourne’s dream of back-to-back flags is over.

Brisbane is one win away from reaching its first major final since 2004.
