Ironman Wales canceled for 2021 due to Covid-19 concerns

The Ironman Wales triathlon event to be held in Pembrokeshire has been canceled for the second consecutive year due to Covid-19.

The event, which draws thousands of athletes and spectators to West Wales, was set to take place on September 12.

The organizers accepted Pembrokeshire County Council’s recommendation not to hold the event, although they said the decision had been made “with a heavy heart”. Ironman Wales would be worth £3.7 million to the local economy.

The event will now return on September 11, 2022, with Ironman announcing that a new five-year agreement has been reached with Pembrokeshire County Council meaning Ironman Wales will take place annually in Tenby until 2026.

Following a careful review of the recent announcement from the Welsh Government, we have been working closely with Pembrokeshire County Council to find a way forward for this year’s event,” said an Ironman statement.

“Uncertainties surrounding the transition to alarm level zero in Wales, the current epidemiological infection rate and unique event venue in Tenby and Pembrokeshire, as well as the large crowds expected to gather on race day were discussed at a meeting with local authorities.

“Due to the unique race ground in Tenby, it has been recommended not to support this year’s hosting agreement and to move the event to 2022. “While we hoped otherwise, we respect the council’s position and follow its recommendation to host the event.” to 2022.

” Pembrokeshire first hosted the Ironman ten years ago – which consists of a 3.86 km swim, 180 km bike ride and a marathon. It is billed as one of the world’s toughest endurance races. events and has attracted athletes from around the world.

Pembrokeshire County Council Cabinet Member for Major Events Phil Baker said the decision to postpone was made in the interests of public safety.

“Given the sheer number of spectators that Ironman has always supported, limited nature of parts of the course and the uncertainty that persists about the Covid-19 situation, after extensive discussions with the organisato we have Ren reluctantly decided that it is not possible for us to support the event this year,” he said.
