Game lawmakers will discuss a request to increase halftime intervals from 15 minutes to 25 so that soccer can introduce Super Bowl-style entertainment in the middle of games.

The idea to spin the money came from CONMEBOL, the governing body of South America that believed it would benefit its competitions, such as the Copa Libertadores, whose final will be played between Palmeiras and Flamengo this Saturday.

Changing the laws would allow English football to also introduce extravagant halftime shows, such as live music in the middle of the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium, if it so wished.

The IFAB legislators will meet on Thursday for their Annual Business Meeting, chaired by the world governing body FIFA.

The meeting agenda does not mention Law 7, the section that details how long halftime can last, but Sportsmail understand that it will be discussed at the end of the virtual meeting.

However, it seems unlikely that CONMEBOL’s request will be endorsed, as IFAB advisory panels have already raised concerns that a longer period of inactivity could increase the risk of players being injured.

The current laws of the game state that “players are entitled to an interval at half time, not to exceed 15 minutes.” A similar attempt to increase the duration to 20 minutes in 2009 was unsuccessful.

FIFA was behind that push, but fans criticized it as a blatant attempt to commercialize the game and line pockets.

CONMEBOL said its intention was to improve the spectacle for fans and said the television broadcast of halftime programs is very well received in other sports around the world.

It is understood that the federation even claimed that the extension would allow coaches to better prepare their players tactically for the second half, thus improving the quality of football on display.

However, the other consideration is how much more money would come from this extension, as evidenced by the extravagance of American football each year.

Half times in the NFL tend to be around 12 minutes long. In the Super Bowl, however, they can last up to 30 minutes.

The Weeknd’s 2021 Super Bowl show was extravagant and brought in huge fees for the ads.

Their intervals can generate as much post-match discussion as the game itself, and it is said that it cost advertisers $ 5.5 million (£ 4.1 million) to secure a 30-second ad in 2021 when Canadian singer The Weeknd performed.

Meanwhile, an update on the trial of additional permanent concussion surrogates is included on the agenda for Thursday’s IFAB meeting.

Sportsmail has long called for temporary surrogates to be introduced in its place, and current protocols are constantly failing.

However, IFAB believes that it needs more data from the ongoing trial and is therefore ready to extend it beyond its initial completion date of August 2022.
