We are going to explain to you how to set up your Google account so you can recover it if you lose it or get hacked. Because prevention is better than cure, especially when Google does not offer effective solutions or human assistance to recover an account in the event that you have not previously configured the account’s security options.
And for that reason, today we are going to explain what these options are, and we will also give you tips not to lose all your data in case you prefer to gamble and not give Google access to another email or phone number with which to save your account. These tips are for your Google account, which includes your Gmail and YouTube accounts and other company services.
Make regular backups
Prevention is better than cure, and therefore, the most important thing to avoid that a loss or theft of your Gmail and Google account does not mean a definitive loss of important data, it is important to make regular backups to always keep your updated data saved and your emails so as not to lose them.
To make a backup copy of your Google files, you have to go to the Google Takeout website. On this website, select the services you want to make a backup of, for example Gmail, but it is better that you do it of all the services with data that you do not want to lose.
Here, to make everything a little easier for you, you can have regular copies of your data sent to you so you don’t have to repeat this process at all times. You can have Google send you the copies every two months to always have an updated one.
Keep your passwords in a safe place
Creating a strong password takes a bit of originality and complicates things by keeping it simple. Writing 2 or 3 words with no apparent relationship to the service or each other, and inserting numbers or symbols will produce passwords that are difficult to forget. And nothing worse than losing access to your account because you forgot that super-secure password that you created.
Therefore, it is recommended that you use a password manager to be able to save your passwords in a safe place. Google has its own manager, but since you would depend on the Google account, you can use a third party password manager like Microsoft Authenticator to easily keep your passwords safe.
Activate 2-Step Verification
And if keeping your passwords safely, even those of old accounts, will prevent you from not being able to access them because you forget the keys, the alternative so that they do not enter your account is to activate two-step verification. Two-step verification is a system with which it is no longer enough to enter your password to enter your account, you will need a second step to confirm your identity.
To activate the verification in two steps you have to enter myaccount.google.com/, or the option Manage your Google account that will appear in any of their services to take you. There, in the section of Security go to the section of Sign in to Google, and in there click on the option Two-step verification. Here, choose the method you want to use, whether it is receiving a message on your mobile, using an authentication application, or the rest of the available options.
Set up a recovery phone
Beyond the options with which to avoid losing your password or not entering your account, it is also just as important configure the options to regain access to your account in case you lose it. These options are possibly the most important not to regret later, and you should have at least one of them configured.
The first is that of set up a recovery phone. When you do this, if there is suspicious activity or if you have lost access to your account, you will have the option of having Google send you a recovery message to alert you to those activities or to help you recover your account. The best thing is that it is your mobile phone number.
To do this, you have to enter myaccount.google.com/, or the option Manage your Google account that will appear in any of their services to take you. There in the section Security go to the section of Methods to verify your identity, and click on the option Recovery phone. Here, you will have to write your phone number.
Set up a recovery email
The second option to recover your account is set up a recovery email, which has to be a different email address than the one you want to protect, either from Google or any other third-party service. But it is important that it is an email that you always have access to or that it is on your mobile configured.
To do this, you have to enter myaccount.google.com/, or the option Manage your Google account that will appear in any of their services to take you. There in the section Security go to the section of Methods to verify your identity, and click on the option Recovery email. Both this option and that of the phone, it is advisable to configure them previously in order to later recover your account.
It is not so easy to recover your email account
But if these tips come too late, there is bad news for you. The system to recover your account in Google is broken, or we can practically say that there are none. If you type in your account name and then say you don’t remember the password, first you will be asked for previous passwords, because Google keeps them on its servers.
In the event that you have configured any of the recovery methods above, then you will be asked to use them in order to recover your account. But if not, there is not much else you can do. If in the past you have configured security questions that no longer exist, Google may ask you, as it may ask you other questions such as how long have you had the account or if you are on a travel site.
Google does not offer any kind of assistance in these cases, and the only thing it proposes on its support page for when all the automation fails is that you create a new replacement account. Therefore, it is important that you protect it previously as we have indicated.
